    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Sometimes I wonder if we're an overlanding or rock crawling forum - in terms of real overlanding performance, as in 1000s of miles traveled, often on road, with a heavy payload, where comfort matters, exactly which vehicle (old Defender included) is better than the new Defender? I live in BC...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

The video sums it up perfectly - the "true enthusiasts" who holds onto their original Defenders are not part of the future customer base. They already have their Defender and will likely keep it forever. This is proven by the few thousand sales a year in 2015. I'm one of the few that would buy...

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

They shouldn't - it's a different class of a vehicle. In other news, Ferrari released the F8. One thing is certain, Corvette / Mustang doesn't have a thing to worry about...

What would cause the cigarette lighter to show 1/2 voltage?

Did you check the voltage at the fuse? If it's 12V there, then there must be a bad connection down the circuit to the socket. Though if resistance is so bad that a voltmeter is showing 6V, it's probably incapable of any current output.

Fully Electric F150 Tows a Train

With enough gearing an ballast, my 16hp tractor can tow a train. Nothing to see here... Unimogs have been towing multiple train cars since the 60's 404s.

Life With A Supercharged RRS For an Overland Rig

Beautiful truck! As long as you keep the build relatively mild, it should retain its superb on-road behavior. We're overlanders after all, not rock crawlers. Very few places a RRS with mild lift can't travel.

    New trucks and 4low...

Oh I know, I could bring a 230V genset, and THEN I could bring a bunch of jerry cans to charge! Wait, easier just to use IC engine in the first place... I'm all for electrification, all city buses and delivery / mail trucks should be electric, IMHO. However, us overlanders are absolutely the...

    HUMMER H1 vs Silverado.

Any links to the story? No doubting you, but curious of the details - was he seat-belted? What's the mode of injury, I see no cab intrusion? Who's the guy in blue in the first photo? Is he the air lifted driver?

    Colorado / Canyon bent frame

Quoting this photo as an example - it's hard to visually estimate frame strength. I hear people say old trucks stronger, boxed stronger, c-channel stronger. The only way to tell is by taking the psi rating of the steel, multiplying by the section modulus. This gives you the maximum bending...

    Colorado / Canyon bent frame

First, GM's response: Oversized tires - contributes nearly nothing, BS excuse. I say "nearly", because technically heavier unsprung weight CAN induce greater forces back to the frame, but not nearly enough to bend a frame Over unbraked trailer limit - again, contributes absolutely nothing. If...

    HUMMER H1 vs Silverado.

It may look bad, but it's called crumple zone and there for a reason - to lower g-forces to the passenger! I have an 8 ton single axle dump truck, if I hit an H1 or another dump truck, both would have a small dent, and both drivers would be dead or at least seriously injured.

    Ford Raptor for Overlanding

It should be mentioned the PW's payload limitation is quite different than a Rebel or Raptor. A PW has 1 ton running gear in every way except springs. Its frame, axles, and power train would have a payload of 6400 in a crew cab dually. So long travel air bags can easily increase payload to 3000...

    New trucks and 4low...

And my Corvette with a stick would smoke the clutch starting out on a 30% logging road, with 1st geared for 60 mph... Both cases is due to a wrong tool for the job. Modern 8+ spd autos remain fully locked past 1st gear, so converter heat is not an issue. My old Dodge 47RE would heat up due to...

    New trucks and 4low...

Whether or not I use 4Lo highly depends on the transmission I have in the truck: In my old 100 series, it's geared relatively short, and I do not need 4Lo (I do not rock crawl) In my 1999 V10 Dodge, the 47RE is ancient with 2.45:1 1st gear. With a Bigfoot camper, I'm in 2Lo (vacuum actuator...

    Increasing Power Wagon payload

Both warranty and design parameters are void. Same happens when GVW is exceed. The cut-off is not black and white. Going over your GVW by 5000 lbs or 5 oz are both "going over", where do you draw the line? A 1" lift / 1" tire size increase, vs 12" long travel suspension on a JK with 44" tires...

    Increasing Power Wagon payload

That wasn't my point, which was: even if you stay below your sticker, the moment you put on the slightest modification you can be held liable in a serious enough accident. All they have to do is hire an OEM engineer as an expert witness. See my post above. Now, I've never seen it happen. I...

    Increasing Power Wagon payload

Yes, EVERY rating is void. center of gravity is increased, suspension calibration, including stability control, is compromised. OEM not liable if you lose control pedestrian protection is no longer guaranteed (same goes for offroad bumpers - you can be sued if you kill / injure a pedestrian)...

    Increasing Power Wagon payload

Whenever people throw the book on GVWR, I always remind everyone of the following: unless your vehicle is BONE STOCK, you can toss every one of the ratings (GVW, GAWRs) out the window. As soon as you change to any tire that's non-OEM, or put on the slightest suspension lift, all your OEM...

OPINION: Single or dual ARB compressor

I can't see how the twin would run hotter, as it's essentially 2 singles together, but with a cooling fan added. Given similar operating conditions of course. If you put the twin in the engine bay, air up 37 to 40s back to back, and only use the single to air up 30 to 33s, in open air, then...
