    How important is GVWR?

What gets me is how the post-2014 PW, with the upgraded 50ksi frame, and and larger rear axle (11.5 vs 10.5 AAM), has LOWER payload than a pre-14!? Ram simply put an artificial GVW limit at 8,510 lbs. With the 2014 curb weight increase (6626 to 7077), they lowered the payload from 1884 to 1433...

    How important is GVWR?

And we can further state once you modify a regular 3500 with taller / lower rate springs, or softer / taller profile tires, then it loses its OEM designed GVWR. That was my point earlier - a lot of us worry about exceeding the GVWR, without realizing the mods that 95% of us do on here negates...

    How important is GVWR?

If you want my take on this - the axle manufacturer GAWRs are a hard limit that I do not exceed. Why? It has the least, if not zero, marketing built it. It's also unaffected by suspension choice from the factory. I also have a problem of how manufacturers arrive at their GVWRs, and I think...

    How important is GVWR?

The axle rating from the axle manufacturer itself (AAM, Meritor, etc.) factors in the bearing / housing loads as well as brakes (if it comes with one). The rating from the OEM, which often is lower, factors in suspension + tires as well. The final GAWR out of the factory factors in all braking...

    How important is GVWR?

How do you define a "win"? If we all sat home, drank green smoothie, ate chicken breast, and ran on a treadmill - then drive a bone stock Corolla to the store to refill your green veggies. You'd live a long life. A long boring life. Win? Every "fun" in life has its risks and associated cost...

    How important is GVWR?

We all know the rules regarding GVWR, but how many of us ACTUALLY follow it (with weight tickets to prove it)? Modern Tacomas can have as little as 950 lbs of payload. Front and rear armour / bumper, sliders, skids, winch, drawer, RTT, big tires, jerry cans, batteries, fridge, and you're left...

    inexpensive 12v tire inflator

Depends if you can catch ViAirs on sale - I picked up TWO 480C compressors for about $270. You won't find ARB portables for nearly that price. Also picked up a 440P for $200. I use the 480Cs for my old V10 Ram on 33s. I don't feel good pushing 33% duty cycle compressors to 80 psi (camper on)...

    120v Air Compressor on Inverter

One model worth checking out is the 225 psi, 4 gal, from Husky - it has a "soft start" that minimizes start-up current, allowing it to run on over 100' of extension cord. In our application, that means as long as the inverter can keep up with the operating amps, then it could also take the...

2013-2017 Ram 3500 front axle disconnect? (Paralysis by analysis)

That I didn't know, cleaver design. But for the OP, I wouldn't let the axle disconnect system or spinning front axle be a deal breaker. My old 1999 V10 Dodge's vacuum axle disconnect has been trouble free for nearly 20 years. An added bonus of axle disconnect is with one simple switch, I can...

2013-2017 Ram 3500 front axle disconnect? (Paralysis by analysis)

To be fair, every modern truck on the road, with the exception of Ford SDs, spin their front drive train. From Ford 1/2 tons, to GMs, to 4runners and Land Cruisers, to LR3/4s, to G-Wagens... So if you're that worried about front axle wear, then you don't have much of a choice.

Vanilla Gorilla: 2017 Power Wagon build

Speaking of payload and GVWR, if should be mentioned that the PW's low payload and GVWR is entirely due to the softer springs. The axle (massive AAM 11.5") is used in the non-Aisin dually trucks, capable of nearly 10k lbs of GAWR. The 50 ksi frame is identical to the 3500, save for a slight...

F-150 guys: Fuel tank size and 5.0 V8 questions?

Can't speak for the GMs, but Dodge definitely has a 32 gal option in CC short bed (5'7) - I have one in mine! It may be an option that few people spec when ordering, but I made sure I ticked off the big tank when building mine. I doubt safety is the reason, because either way the fuel tank...

Vanilla Gorilla: 2017 Power Wagon build

I was scratching my head at this because I SWEAR my 2014 1500 came stock with HIR in the projectors. A bit of research: http://www.lightbulbs4cars.com/ram%20bulb%20guide Seems like RAM cheaped out after 2015 and put 9005s into the projectors. To save what, $10 per truck? I'll keep the 9012s...

    Ram EcoDiesel towing questions

How much are you looking to tow? I don't have one, but have ridden in one, and they perform well within their designed capacity. Their hp and torque matches a mid-90's ISB, with a far superior transmission. I personally won't hesitate even with 10,000 lbs (not all the time of course).

F-150 guys: Fuel tank size and 5.0 V8 questions?

Size of the fuel tank is limited by frame length. A modern crew cab short bed (5'7) is the exact same length / wheelbase as a traditional regular cab 8' bed. That's why they can fit the same size tanks. Back in the 80's, a "short bed" meant regular cab and 6'6 bed, which has a shorter frame /...

Block heater enough to warm van?

People also die from electrocution, electrical fires, vehicle rollovers (tall off road trucks with high COG), falling, riding bicycles, etc. Better not do any activity with a remote chance of death.

    2017+ F350 RTT Mounting Options

Lower center of gravity, lower wind drag, ease of access / climb, ease of underground parking access. If you don't need to store tall things (like an ATV) in the bed, why put it up high? I too, mount my RTT flush with my roofline.

For those that carry Guns and Overlanding

The alternative is they leave and rob a place where they're less likely to get return fire. Robbers want a cash-out, not a murder charge on their hand.

Combine truck to camper charge capability with winch feed?

Your plan totally works; in fact, I'm doing something similar. Your main cable running from the front to the rear would act as the "bus". During charging, the alternator simply brings the bus voltage up to its regulated point (say 14.4V). The camper and starting battery would simultaneously...

For those that carry Guns and Overlanding

By your line of reasoning every robber will shoot a cop at first sight. Better tell the cops to stop carrying right? Human psychology doesn't work that way.
