Dense foliage can impede the device seeing the sky. Messaging is not always instant and can take while. I've used my InReach in Iraq and Afghanistan without any issues .
I would use my smart phone to connect to the device. The downside to that the smart phone will have a short battery...
I spoke to the guys at Journeys Offroad at Expo West. They had a demo van there. Looked good. They sounded like they knew what they were talking about. I'd give them a call and see what happens.

The InReach uses the Iridium satellite constellation. SPOT uses the Globalstar satellite constellation.
The Military uses the Iridium network. Globalstar had issues years ago with a failing network but has rebuilt it.

When I get my new Land Cruiser finished , it will just be a matter of topping off water, adding food and a bag of clothing. Hook up the trailer and ready to go .
I swapped out a grab handle bolt with a RAM mount ball. The ball needs to be pushed out to clear the handle . I just used some washers to space out the ball. .
Now I can locate my InReach on the P/S up high against the windshield and out of the way.
