That was one option we talked about. It looked like the threads were broken off so we were concerned that there was not enough material to cut new threads.
Nice build you have there.
Don't mess with those two screws unless you need to replace the drum. there are pics of the hub and drum in my other build thread.
To service the bearings, you just need to remove the grease cap, cotter pin (nut retainer), and nut. This should allow you to pull the...
With all of the welding done, we moved the trailer off the concrete to service hubs and paint.
Then we saw this...... I guess someone missed "The Proper Way To Install An Axle Nut" day at school......
This was at the end of day 3 or 4.
After the profanity stopped, we called it...
Making a few gussets.
Welding the tongue extension. Settled on 3' from tip of existing a-frame arms to new coupler. Used 3" .250 square tubing. I prefer the way we did the gussets/draw bar attachment on this trailer over the way we did mine. First attempt at action welding pics with a...
Frame had some rust/grime build up. Nothing major. Looks like the frame and bed did not start out their lives together.
Soon to be previous tenant.
After a trip to the car wash, it was ready for demo, wire brush, and prep for welding.
After working on my trailer, it was my dads turn for us to work on his. Objective was to complete a basic build in 2 weeks. Will add pics as I organize them.
Accumulated parts and provisions. Ended up not using the rear stabilizers, awning, or rear 2" receivers. Not pictured - GM alloy...
A few more pics.
New wheels and tires. The new wheels are a functional improvement because they don't hold water/dog piss. The new tires were mostly an aesthetic improvement. There was nothing wrong with the Dextero tires but these match the tow vehicle and look the part. Went with a...
Great start and nice fab skills. If you plan to use the strut to tie things down etc, I would consider rotating the strut 90 degrees towards the inside of trailer.
Looking forward to your build. Sounds like you have a good plan/goal. If you are fine with the 8 lug wheels and are happy with the surge brakes, there is no reason to swap the axle.
I would expect that a clean set of sides, bows, and tarp should get $300-500.
Tarp looks great. What did the total end up at?
Pneumatic wheels on my air compressor barely do the job. I used a steel faster for my trailer landing gear. Northern Tool has 4-8" options for under $30.
My only advise would be not to go. A trip and like that with the accompanying responsibility should not be taken lightly or rushed in preperation.
I would want a proven vehicle/trailer and the knowledge to work on them before considering a trip like that.
Original trailer was pretty nice. Off to a good start with the new one. Very nice fab skills. Why did you attached the coupler to the draw bar the way you did?
Would look cleaner if it slipped inside the draw bar (if it fit).
