Now to the corner/jack bracket repairs. Both sides were similarly damaged by the impact of the limb knocking the camper off the jacks & blocks/cribbing thus bending the brackets away from the frame.
Lower corner area with the jack brackets removed:
This is really bad & discovering this...
Almost done with the final roof panel repair. The "tear" in the roof did not involve any damage to the roof framing. There are some other related minor surface denting...but no other holes or bent framing. Here is what I did, I offer it only as it might help someone or give them even better...
This was NOT part of my fall plans:
We had a severe storm in No. Virginia and a large tree limb fell onto my house and the parked FWC Hawk camper.
The limb put a palm sized hole through the roof shingles and underlayment and ripped up two sections of vinyl wall siding on the house.
The...
You can travel the world for adventure, discovery and excitement...but the journey to re-connect with distant family will always be the most worthwhile of your life.
Another great journey! Thanks for sharing.
We try to carry some of the glue pad type mice traps. They pack small & can be placed in many places. You target where the mice travel. In a overland vehicle you likely will want to use duct tape to place and secure as a rough road can move them...
A real-life example of what you're trying to do: We have a Four Wheel Camper truck camper that has a 160 watt panel on the roof. I have a 100ah lithium battery in the camper. The panel works great in most situations...but when parking in the shade, or after a series of cloudy days, or the...
Another Transition: EBIKES!
A decent while back I posted a trip report that dealt with a great trip and some transitions:
https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/va-to-ut-co-back-with-a-new-rig-a-daughter-and-a-dog.227519/
In summary we sold our “RV family camper” a BlueBird Wanderlodge...
Stunning report and photos...a true world class adventure. Thanks for sharing.
I can relate to having your "kids" joining up with you. Mine have done the same and the memories are something to truly treasure.
"Lies, damned lies, and statistics" to quote Mr. Twain and I'll add "self-reported fuel mileage". Just too many variables.
A thought:
Consider the cost of fuel over say 1000 miles. Fuel price of $4.00. At 12 MPG the cost is $333. At 15 MPG it would be $266. A difference of less than...
I guess I'm the odd man out. I'd forgo the gauge. My experience is that they typically only give a rough estimate and are prone to problems.
What is the real issue...perhaps the root issue is you need more water.
My preference is to:
1: Carry a spare water container completely independent...

My summary of the trip with more detail/photos: https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/cape-lookout-national-seashore-obx-roamings-2023.238869/
A note on the NPS Campgrounds along the lower OBX to include Oregon Inlet, Hatteras, Frisco & Ocracoke:
I've stayed at all of these CG's over the years and they offer the same amenities at each location to include a paved site spot that is mostly level, a BBQ, table and easy access to potable...
In early May of 2023 I made plans to run down from Northern Virginia to the Outer Banks (OBX) of North Carolina. My primary destination was to explore the Cape Lookout National Seashore (CLNS). I've been a frequent visitor to the general OBX area over the years but never visited the CLNS. This...
Nice report. I've run the route most of the way on a KLR and do a fair amount of forest camping in PA in my truck camper.
A nice map resource for PA State Forest Campsites is here: https://maps.dcnr.pa.gov/bof/camping/
At the end of 2022 they updated the reservation system...as far as I...
Solar comment & related experience: My Hawk has the FWC mounted 160watt panel on the roof. I initially had the two paired AGM 75ah batteries and the standard FWC wiring (meaning limited charging from my truck when on the road). My power loads include roof mounted fans, propane furnace, LED...
I have same model/year, but no toilet.
The typical truck to camper wiring installation for a FWC can be found on YouTube. FWC has several videos that will walk you through your various systems. Also the owners manual can be downloaded from the FWC website.
That camper wiring cable is: White...
