Just a couple of observations:
1: Note where the lifting ram and primary hinge point are on that tow rig. Both are IFO the rear axle. The loading is well forward of the rear of the truck body not "hung off the rear".
2: Regular street/pavement use vs. typical forest roads, rough roads &...
It seems there might be more to this whole "truck camper thing" than:
A: "the salesman said"
B: "I think we are under GVWR"
C: "so far I have had no problems"
D: "It's a full size truck"
A reliable vehicle, good tires and some common sense will take you far.
When I was 9 years old back in 1963 my father and I took our Chevrolet Monza from Costa Rica to Texas. What an adventure!
Enjoy your trip.
Great advice on down sleeping bags. I have a Exped Dreamwalker that works as a typical zip up bag, or as a hammock under quilt, or unzipped as a flat quilt.
Always have it in the Hawk…because furnaces might not run and propane tanks run out.
Nice work!
I've got a '05 RAM 3500 and I'd just like to mention that Dodge left some small sections of the main wiring harness unwrapped in several places under the hood. No danger of abrasion but these sections are deserving of wire loom covering IMO due to potential issues with mice or other...
Nice updates & photos.
I've never needed my spare 5 gallons of fuel or water...but having them gives me a nice feeling when I'm getting low on one or the other.
I do worry about someone tampering with them. The cans are locked to the truck and I've safety wired the lids shut so you at least...
Great report and photos. Thank you!
Detailed reports like this help me plan my roaming trips out west. The excellent tailgate cooking details are just a bonus!
Trestle's response lays it out very well. My version of "option B":
Over a span of several types of camping vehicles and winter misadventures (van, pop-up trailer, trailer, motorhome, truck camper) in which they all had a plastic water tank & 12 volt pump water systems I tried various...
Of course you still have the crazy quilt state and local laws about hollow point bullets and magazine capacity …most of which can win you a felony charge.
A happy anniversary: one year owning my rig with a FWC Hawk. Have 45+ nights in it…good weather, bad weather, in hot and cold. Love it.
This thread helped my decision process. Thanks to the OP and the other contributors.
Among the many options in the general theme of "truck campers" I will...
Part 4: Enjoying the Thousand Islands & “The River”.
For many years my family and I have enjoyed spending occasional summer season time in the Thousand Island area of upstate New York. The escape from the heat and humidity of Virginia is a treat, as is the wonderful scenery, the small towns...
Screw Auger Falls, N. Oxford, ME.:
Humm...what am I missing? The essential kit will include some bug spray:
Stunning wildflowers in this area:
Success Pond Road, near Berlin NH:
2 day stops I deemed "fly worthy":

Part 3: Leaving coastal Maine and exploring westward.
Having thoroughly enjoyed the time spent along the coastal areas of southern and mid Maine it was time to head west and explore the more rural, forested and mountain areas that lie in the interior of Maine and stretch through northern...
Part 2: Coastal Maine Re-discovered.
Coming from Cape Cod we entered Maine on Rt95 and then sought a slower pace on Rt1 as we continued north. After cruising down memory lane a few miles and passing through Ogunquit, Wells, and Kennebunk we decided to grab our first official MAINE lobster...
The hot and muggy dog days of August in Northern Virginia had me dreaming of cooler areas up North. Time had come to do some vehicle based roaming & exploring and enjoy vast forested areas, logging roads, cool clear rivers and of course Lobster Rolls!
The basic plan would be a loop routing up...
Very nice rig and your video production is really well done.
One thought is to check your propane tank mounting …most portable tanks should be stored and used vertically.
Safe travels!
