I am wondering if there is a valve stopping the brake canisters from releasing the springs. Dumping all the air from the tanks won't help because the valve stops the air loss from the canister. I am only guessing here, see if you can find a schematic of the air system.
The spring brakes should engage/release somewhere around 3-4 Bar. The red air warning light comes on just before the spring brakes engage. When driving you should be constantly scanning that gauge. When you air up with the parking lever released you should hear the rear springs being compressed...
The fact that it sometimes takes minutes for the spring brake valve to release air is concerning, it should be instant. The fact that dumping all the air does not engage the spring brakes rules that out as the problem, but it needs to be looked at. Do you routinely dump air from the wet tank...
BTW the alternator is 200 Amp 24 V. Don't forget to grease it when you do your routine service, also there is a grease cup on top of the transmission that needs regular attention.
The "parking brake" is the spring brake. It engages when there is no pressure to the spring brake side of the canister. It is a massive spring that is held back by air pressure. when you stop and engage the spring brake you hear the sudden air escape from the spring brake chamber, this pushes...
With the front wheels chocked jack a rear wheel off the ground. With air in the system disengage the spring brakes and rotate the wheel. There is an adjuster you can turn with a large screwdriver. Adjust until the brake drags then back off a bit. Repeat on the other rear wheel. Test spring...
An led light bar throws great light, the Heffalump has two led spot lights up high, great off road, but be prepared for a huge fine if caught with them on on public roads.
The Heffalump has a 24V 200 Amp alternator so power is not an issue.
You may not like this but my best advice is: DO NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT. No matter how good your lights, stop when the sun goes down.
It is too bad, Rob Pickering is a great mechanic, but he always seems to be a one man show. Once you get to know him you are set. It is a long way to go, if you are ever out that way stop in.
Unimog Canada is Hans Mross in Langley BC. We dropped in on his shop on our way through. Hans is...
Rob Pickering in Colorado is the only mech in the USA I know that I would trust.
He can order parts for you and get them drop shipped anywhere. It would be worth the time to go to La Junta. Go to the dinosaur tracks in Picket Wire canyon, check out Bent's fort and maybe if you're lucky Rob will...
If the parking brake is not working properly the rear brakes may need adjustment. Front wheels chocked, parking brake off, neutral. The wheel needs to be lifted off the ground . There is a rubber plug in the dust cover that gives access to the adjuster. While turning the wheel rotate the...
Appliances that work on a wide range of voltages are not common.
You would be better with a battery charger that can accept a wide range and then have your inverter put out the constant voltage required.
