Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

Didn't really read my post very carefully did you? Or put it in the context as a response to a previous post, huh? And what makes you think after a lifetime of backcountry travel (sans luxury 4x4) that I lack the wilderness acumen to stay alive? I responded to a post asserting that a gun can be...

    27+ bike

I haven't had an shifting issue on any of my bikes in...can't remember. All of them have performed perfectly for the last 20-30 bikes I've owned. I'd probably have to go back to the early 90s before I can remember a bike that had nagging shifting issues and that was likely chain suck.

The reality is, whether you're talking about a $200 drivetrain, or a $1500 drivetrain, they both use $3 cables to actuate each shift. Maintaining those cable system is a once or twice a year necessity that takes all of 30 minutes to do, but can have a system shifting flawlessly for thousands of...

    27+ bike

Stump, Many people who have derailleur issues instantly think the remedy is a Rolhoff hub system. The reality is, derailleur woes are rider influenced 99.9% of the time. It's either a neglect to maintain cables and housings, not knowing the hanger is tweaked, or just riding until all of the...

    27+ bike

But...you can in the near future pair a IG hub with belts, even on the new Boost hub spacing. I think you're completely nuts to do it, but it can be done. It will be heavy as an anvil and require a mess of cables, but possible. You'll be like that guy trying to fit carburetors on a Prius, but...

    27+ bike

Stump, we just missed meeting each other at the OJ open house. I was within arm's reach of you, but we missed. Having owned belt drives and Rohlhof hubs in the past, the pairing of the two sounds like complete crap to me. I wanted to love both, and both came with giant helpings of...

    Salsa Ride Camp

I was soooo bummed I couldn't go. I was all ready to show up on the Julian household doorstep and hit the camp. Bummer. Next year. Sounds like a few ExPo members were there. Dang.

Packing for the Alpine Loop - Salsa Deadwood

Soon I hope. I'm looking at the Cutthroat to replace my Ti Fargo, but that's a tall order. In other exciting news, I meet with another ExPo member in the bike industry to arrange for a long term test of their response to the Pony Rustler. I'm excited about that one. I'll know more next week...

Packing for the Alpine Loop - Salsa Deadwood

I put about 300 miles, if not more, on the Deadwood and rode it one last time an hour prior to putting it in a box headed back to Salsa HQ. Loved it. It is spry for what it is, even under load.

Rambling questions about moving to the fat bike world

You'll want those tires way below 12-14. That's pretty darn hard for a fat bike even in dry conditions. I tend to run 9-11 front/rear.

    All of that camping gear...

This is why I love to motorcycle camp and bikepack. When I bikepack, I take 20 pounds of gear...max...and can have a full camp pitched in under 15 minutes and dinner ready in 25. When we car camp...er...excuse me...overland, I often take way more stuff, but still keep it very simple. Again, camp...

    lavish back packing meals

Over the last year, I have propelled myself over a thousand miles of bikepacking travel with Justin's Almond butter packs and Epic meat bars. I throw in some fig bars, morning oatmeal and Good to Go dehydrated dinners and I can go forever. I also throw in Cheese Heads, Jelly Belly jelly beans...

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

Another excellent point. One of my friends said he carries for those reasons: in the event he has to spend days in the wilderness due to an unforeseen incident. I get it. I also asked him if he uses anything like a SPOT or inReach and he looked at me like I had three heads. :) I use an inReach...

Surly Pugsley - Weight Weenie Inquiries

I have a Lauf on route for my BG. To be honest, not sure what I think of that thing. I'll have to wait and see.

Surly Pugsley - Weight Weenie Inquiries

I have Van Helgas on my Beargrease and now on my Bucksaw. I also have some Dillenger 4s I used on my BG and some Vee Rubber that I thought was average at best.

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

I think this is highly influenced by where you live, the areas you frequent and other variables. I spend about 30-35 nights a year in the backcountry and have for the better part of twenty years. I can't think of a single negative encounter. I can however remember scads of opportunities to meet...

Action cam review on the Verge. And the winner is...

I've been using the Sony 4K Action Cam lately. The images are great, but as that review states, the menu navigation is terrible.
