If you've made it this far, you've earned it:
(some moving & some still pictures put together in a blender)
As far as the write-up goes, the conclusion is coming soon...
One step forward, one step back, ten steps forward, two steps back...
The day alternated between smooth, high(er) speed, dirt highways and technical roads rife with hill climbs and washouts. With the rise and fall of the speedometer needle, our hopes of reaching Lubec followed.
The brief...
Beaver dams. Dead-ends. Hill climbs. Gunshots.
This was the day that would make or break our journey. I approached it just like the previous two days, but with a little more purpose in my actions. I knew that little things we did all day would add up to either success or failure, I was even...
Welcome to the summit of Mt DRAM
Spencer & crew had set off down the trail on the far side to size up the obstacle ahead. Without the deep snow cover of DRAM2, the rock obstacles were laid bare. Will and I hung back, taking in the views and stretching our legs. The wind was cutting...
The diagnosis was
a stuck valve in Spencer's air line, causing the compressor to continue running.
The proposed fix: heat. First up: propane torch. After a few minutes, propane torch was abandoned and plan B was drawn up: The lovely checkpoint attendant's hair dryer! After a few minutes on...
After the worst
night's sleep I've had in my roof tent in quite a while, the wind and the cold would also work their magic on breakfast and packing up. To give you an idea of the wind, I had strapped my ladder to my jerry cans just to make sure I didn't wake up inside a roof tent sandwich...
There was good news and bad news
Spencer had determined that time, heat, and pressure had sealed up Boomer's leaking upper radiator hose (for the most part).
Ashwin had filled up his 4-runner with 7.5 gallons of not gas, not diesel, but kerosene. Major oops.
Brainstorming a solution...
It's always fun
breaking down soaking wet gear and packing it all up in your previously dry truck. At least that's what we tell Spence after he climbs out of his climate-controlled paradise affectionately known as Boomer.
The morning was a blur after crawling out of the tent somewhere near...
The Team
Elyse & Ashwin (Ashwin's behind the camera for this shot), shared the driving of a keurig-equipped 4-runner, with their pup Butterscotch along for the ride
Ryan & Restrepo sported a Porsche Cayenne S with cool stickers ahem racing livery
Ralph, our designated photographer and his...
"You're going on a trip through northern Maine with a bunch of people you met on the internet?"
"Yes."
I have to admit I was a bit worried after seeing last years' snowy trip report that this years' 1-week delay could mean exceptionally challenging driving and camping. After Pittston Farm...
Thanks Gregg. It's a $50 cargo rack from harbor freight that I worked over with a sawsall and a drill. It survived DRAM3 with 10 gallons strapped to it without issue! Sure, it's a bit of a pain to pull it off each day to setup camp, but for 50 bucks you're going to have some trade-offs...
No. I've put my tent away soaking wet and climbed in it the next day and it's still dry inside.
The only time I ever had water intrusion was during a tropical storm with 45 mph winds and inches of rain. Even then, it wasn't that bad, only pushing water through the seams on the edges...
So far so good. I loaded the jeep up heavy last weekend to test out my setup. Tires did well aired down to the low 20's, but I stuck to easy trails so I certainly didn't max out my articulation. I didn't have any rubbing whatsoever. I'll update again after a good roadtrip in a couple weeks.
I don't have anything to really add to your specific 2-door situation, but I do have one comment for you.
The idea of going topless with the tent & rack up there sounds fun, but in my experience it's unbearably windy. I pulled just the 2 panels above the front seats off with my RTT up there...
Sabre, that's one heck of a packing job. What happens if you need the saw? Unpack everything?
That's one of my problems packing, is trying to guess what I won't need access to before I bury it under the back seat somewhere...
I got a new rig and have a new packing setup, including a diy rack...
