    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

No one is criticizing how it drives, only what has been presented so far, which is extensive data and media. I'm sure it drives quite nice, just like their other comfy little cars. It's probably even more capable than any modern LR. It's a decent Discovery 5, much better than that bloated...

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

This is a civil discussion so far. The thread is supposed to mock criticizers, but the product is so deserving of criticism that it invariably veers into actual criticism. If we can't debate the merits, or lack thereof, of relevant products then this forum is severely flawed.

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

The last years of production are meaningless. It was 15 years overdue for a major refresh and everyone knew it. Prior to that, the Defender/Series were the OG market. Sure, they weren't pulling plows anymore, but every farmer has at least one utility vehicle of some sort. However, most of the...

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

If the new Defender proves itself by emerging as a valuable workhorse and apex recreational 4x4, I'll consider it a Defender. However, I'd say the odds of it becoming a common sight among farmers, contractors, law enforcement, oil and gas exploration, mining operations, military, NGO logistics...

I agree than older is not better, but newer is not better either. Better is better. The Wrangler and classic Defender, by the numbers, and by experience, are superior in terms of capability to newer LRs, which the new Defender is strikingly similar. You get hung up on the locker issue, but any...

Real one in the background makes it look like a Playskool toy. At least it fits in with its boutique sister-models now.

It depends. Those newer vehicles, in high-traction dry terrain, compared to the early non-traction control Defender, were situationally more capable. Add TC and/or a locker, and the Defender is back on top in nearly every scenario, same as the Wrangler. All else equal, it comes down to basics...

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

In an effort to offer some constructive vision, let's consider how a proper Defender could actually be built. Take the RAM 1500, a modern coil-sprung body-on-frame vehicle, which like the original Series trucks performs actual work, far more any modern fashion "Land Rover" does. Take that 1500...

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

The Jeep Wrangler is the classic's only rival in terms of capability. Equip both with identical tires and lockers, and they'll compete head-to-head. No surprise, as both are built upon very similar chassis/suspension designs. As the new Defender is very similar to the LR3/4, which was not even...

    New Defender Rage/Hate Thread

Yes, the new Defender, LR3, LR4, Land Cruiser, Ford/GM/Toyota/RAM trucks are all likely to be more durable in most tests. However, that does not make them Defenders. There's obviously more to it, and they missed it. As far capability, no head-to-head comparisons have been done. No one can...

Pedestrian safe regulations are a bandaids. They do not address the cause. Keep treating the symptoms, forcing automakers to compromise design, and we’ll end up with only a few design solutions deemed optimal. Every vehicle will look even more similar than they already do. Functionality will be...

They've always been "separate". RRC, D1, Def all had oil, intercooler, coolant, AC, and trans coolers front and center, like most other vehicles. Some were sandwiched, some were packaged side-by-side in the "radiator", and others looked like a towel bar. This is not an improvement.

Facts aren't angry. It's a brush bar. It will serve its purpose as a brush bar. It is clearly, to those who understand the difference, not a bull bar. Let's consider a true example of one and quote this very publication: My opinion that it's ugly is not angry. It's just ugly. The angry eyes...

That is no bull bar. It will provide zero protection from animal strikes. It's a brush bar, useful for trampling saplings at most. It's also ugly, the way it frames those stupid angry eye headlights and ruinously placed heat exchangers.

JLR designers aren't the only ones creating bipolar designs.

What would you replace your LR3/4 with ?

I tried a TJ for a while, but was very disappointed with the transfer case and fuel tank ground clearance, over-hood visibility, weak axles on non-rubicon, no tall/skinny C load range tires, overly-low ratio rubicon transfer case, and short stamped steel control arms.

    2020 Defender Spy Shots....

Lockers are an option in nearly all 4x4s, either factory or aftermarket. The stock articulation, off-road angles, and weight of classic coil-sprung LRs are relatively excellent. Very competitive with Jeeps, Toyotas, and others of the same vintage, or even many modern 4x4s who've had decades of...
