We put the floor down and punched holes in the metal all the way around it. The holes allowed us to spot weld the bottom in.
That was about as far as we could go for now on this project since we were waiting on to sides to be bent. But there is always a project to be completed. My brother...
It will be in the shape / size of a 416 except a little longer. The sides are getting bent this week at the metal shop. The raw material cost is not that much but setting up the machine is where the cost is. He is have a few sets bent to save on the cost (future builds). This trailer has to...
We put the axel, springs and shocks on. Only issue was that the hub was the wrong size so they are shipping new hubs with the correct lug pattern.
We also attached the tongue jack. In order for it to fold up correctly we had to cut the bracket off and reattach it lower. We also had to add a...
Mark this is the answer to working low. I will say that welding upside down on my back was not my best work, I got a few burns.
Here the finished plating.
A close up of the dimpling.
We got a little work done this last weekend.
Thanks, it's dimpled not flat so it gives the metal more strength (it's hard to see in the pictures). Also going with our concept price and weight using metal and punching holes in it is cheaper than expanded metal and it's lighter than solid metal.
I'll be taking a trip to help out my brother this weekend. We are looking at installing the axel, springs and shocks on the trailer. Here is another update on the trailer. Another new tool, a hole punch, it punches 1 inch holes in the metal.
A few test holes.
The rear corner installed...
A little more progress and a new tool. My brother just got a pipe bender. Used the bender to build the outside frame.
The hitch as you can see in the picture will have an eye to hook to the vehicle.
Build #3 is well on it's way, this will take all the lessons learned from the first two builds and improve upon them. We are going with work smarter not harder and keeping the weight and price down.
Laying out the frame.
The fenders were home built not bought as in the previous two builds.
First thanks for the complement and my brother is the metal working smart guy. It's been a learning experience for both of us. His skills have improved 10 fold after completing two trailers, along with his selection of tools that he has now. I think that this was what you were talking about...
So here is the latest trip to Pilot Mountain last week. Packed up and ready to go.
This was the second time taking out the new tent and it worked great, it kept the dog dry through a rain heavy storm the first night.
Had the party lights working on this trip also.
And a view of Pilot...
Thank you, it's a work in progress. The 3rd build is getting ready to get started. Now that my brother has had two trailers to experiment on, he is ready to start his. The fuel and water cans are from Amazon (links below)...
Here is a few close ups of the latch. Hope this helps out.
Outside closed.
Top which is a bolt.
Inside latch, closed.
Inside latch open.
Another view inside closed.
Good looking build, looking forward to seeing where you go with it. Are you going to put a RTT on the top or a rack of some kind? If you are I would leave the 150lb struts on it, the weight will even out with those items.
I'd say the only limitation would be your imagination and budget. Mine stated off just as a trailer rebuild with no tent, lid, ect, now it grown into a comfortable camping rig.
This is what I started with.
And her is where I am today.
One question actually a few. How long did it take to get your Atlas bumper in, I've been waiting almost 2 months now. Did you have any issues mounting the bumper on? Is your CB antenna on the side of the bumper? I'm trying to figure out where I will but mine if I ever get the bumper in. Thanks
It has H on the side of the box, as far as the rest of the questions I'm not sure. The paper that came with it said it's Land Rover upgrade and will fit all 4X4 vehicles, 600K white daylight. I tried to take pictures so that you could read all the information on the box and paperwork it came with.
SOLD I have a HID light replacement for a Land Rover (6000K white daylight), they are brand new, I won them at a Land Rover event and they do not fit my jeep. $50 plus shipping.
The other modification was the lights were hard wired so I don't need to hook them up each time. The side and back lights were wired in and a light was added inside the lid to see at night. The switch panel was also added to the tongue box.
Just a look at the latching system on the lid.
