    Knife Sharpening

Brian, good videos and good information. I had forgotten to mention that I use a strop (actually one of our old castoff girths) occasionally as well, but not always. Watching the chap in the video sharpen a serrated edge reminds me of a time when I discovered that my father-in-law had taken...

    Knife Sharpening

I was a meat cutter (Great A&P Tea Co.) during my high-school years (middle part of the last century) and I'm pretty finicky about our knives. Most of the gadgets one can purchase that are "guaranteed" to deliver the user ultra-sharp edges are simply that, gadgets. I own one of the Spyderco...

    styles of California Pinot Noirs

Scott, I regret that I know little about the wines from CO. On our way north from Santa Fe, NM, last fall we spent a couple of nights in Durango while I engaged in some research (The Attraction of Oncorhynchus mykiss to a Selection of Dry Flies) on the Animas River. At dinner one night I...

    styles of California Pinot Noirs

Good suggestions all, and you're probably speaking of the tempranillo or dolcetto from Abacela. Both are excellent red wines. At one time there was thought that the tempranillo is a descendant of pinot noir, but I think information has changed about that. In any case, it's good. In my comment...

    styles of California Pinot Noirs

Chip, first off. I hope we aren't taking your thread too far afield. Scott, you make a couple of valid observations. Yes, when it comes to taste whether it’s in wine, art, literature, cinema, or anything of that sort, “good” is subjective. There are, it seems to me, merits in observing and...

    styles of California Pinot Noirs

James Thurber’s New Yorker cartoon with the caption “It’s a naïve domestic Burgundy without any breeding, but I think you’ll be amused by its presumption”, hangs over my desk. Wines made from pinot noir grapes have long been my preference when it comes to fine dining, and those big, alcoholic...

    New jeep in the forum

I lived in a dorm during my first three years, but when Diana and I returned from Germany in '62 we rented 515 Court St, just across from the SW corner of the campus. Diana had a horse which we kept out on Morganton Rd. We made numerous dirt road trips into the Chilhowees (Smokies too, for...

    New jeep in the forum

Welcome Darton. Ahhhhh. The Chilhowee Mountains. Maryville College grad here. I was there three years, then took some time off courtesy of Uncle Sam, married and returned to MC for my B.A. I'm Class of '59, but didn't actually finish until '62 after my military service. Our first 4X4 was a...

    Fiat?

Yes, a press release came across yesterday afternoon that Fiat and Chrysler have signed a "non-binding agreement" for Fiat to have a 35% interest in Chrysler. It goes on to say that no cash is involved, only access for C to F's technology. Allen R On Edit: Sorry, forgot about your question...

How do you use HAM in an Emergency?

I'll just add a note to all this good information. In addition to a 2m, cell phone, and sat phone we carry an SP-200 NAV/COM handheld transceiver. Well worth the price. We've used it three times communicated with air support in emergency situations and it made the difference each time. Allen R

    Alaska Fishing

Ahhh, Dutch Harbor. I'll bet more than a few of us have seen a few episodes of "Deadliest Catch". I've been out to the Aleutian chain. It was years ago and it was only for a couple of days (tdy, ASA stuff) and have always wanted to return for a more leisurely visit...not under the conditions...
