They're used on military vehicles...but I don't like the fact that if the engine quits, thats it....at least with an electric winch you have a few moments of battery left.
Yaesus are feature-rich, and can be a bit intimidating to use at first. They are great radios, with great factory support if needed (as do Icoms - I've not been impressed with Kenwood). I suggest getting a 'Nifty manual' for them, or downloading a cheatsheet. The programming software is nice...
Like many, I've carried pioneer tools on off-road trips for years. I've had occasion to use the shovel, and high-lift jack, and even a bow saw from time to time.
I've never had to use my ax, though. Has anyone used one regularly? All I seem to do with mine is sharpen it, and apply...
I REALLY like the Sanyo Eeneloop batteries - available from Amazon, Costco, etc.
They hold a charge very well, they are high power (on the order of 2amps), and they last quite a while. In the past I've tried various small rechargeables, and been disappointed. I use these Eeneloops in most...

The radio costs $600, the GPS unit an additional $100 (HRO prices)...
Kind of last chance / bailout. It's just for us, with good knots we don't really need the 15:1 NFPA safety margin :) And with a good descender (and a double wrap) it's not hard to control.
We actually rapped off of a similar piece (which we have re-purposed to non-life support applications)...
