Another question: Do you have to open the carrier to pop open the rear hatch? I was concerned with having to unlatch and swing the carrier around every time I wanted to open the rear hatch. Thanks, Casey

Looks great! I've been trying to decide how to approach the same issue with my 95 Tahoe, and I like your solution! Casey

Tire Recommendations: Mostly highway miles + some offroad

I was really looking at those tires too, but I decided I wanted something with a bit more aggressive tread. I agree, they look like really good tires for a daily driver. Casey

15" vs. 16" or larger wheels?

All right, I've decided to go with a 285/75R16 tire (either the Cooper S/T Maxx or Toyo A/T II) and get some 16" rims. Next question: steel vs aluminum? I've looked at used OEM take-offs, and haven't seen anything I've liked. I found these at Summit Racing for a real good price: They are...

Tire Recommendations: Mostly highway miles + some offroad

I'm a big Cooper fan myself. I've got a new set of Coopers on the wife's minivan. We got over 80K miles on the last set! Of course, my wife doesn't quite understand why the tires for my Tahoe cost so much more than for her minivan! :) I've got a buddy who runs the TW Guard Dogs (yes, the...

Tire Recommendations: Mostly highway miles + some offroad

I talked with a friend of mine today who owns a tire shop and is also an avid off-roader. He strongly recommends the Cooper S/T Maxx or the Toyo Open Country A/T II for my situation. He hasn't used the Maxx yet, but loves the older S/T. He's also used the Toyo and says it can't be beat. So...

Tire Recommendations: Mostly highway miles + some offroad

Thanks for the opinions everyone, I really appreciate it! Thank you for that analysis! That's exactly the kind of information I'm looking for. I was thinking that would probably be the case. I've never run a set of mud terrains on a full size. I have some Wild Country mud terrains on my...

Tire Recommendations: Mostly highway miles + some offroad

It's time for new shoes for my Tahoe. I'm looking for the perfect tire, of course! I'm probably going to replace my current 15" rims with some 16" versions, and go with an LT285/75R16 size. I drive a lot of highway miles, with a 45 mile round trip to work 5 days a week. So I'm looking for a...

New shoes for the family truckster

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I was wondering how you liked the Wildpeaks after all this time? I'm researching new shoes, and am quite interested in the Wildpeaks. Thanks, Casey

What happened to the 17" tires and Cragar wheels? What size tires do you have now? Are you running any sort of lift kit? I'm trying to get my Tahoe into that category as well! :) Thanks, Casey

15" vs. 16" or larger wheels?

I know, isn't that weird? If you look for aftermarket rims, they usually are 15x8, then 15x10; 16x8, 16x10, etc. I've not seen any available 15x8.5 rims myself. Only certain OEM wheels come in the .5" sizes, and usually they're narrow. Casey

15" vs. 16" or larger wheels?

I'm really leaning towards 16" rims now. Not only are 15" tire choices limited, but most 33" tires are 12.50 wide, which are not approved for my 8" wide rims. I know they still work, as I've run 13.50" tires on 8" rims before, but not on a daily driver. I'd rather stay in the approved rim...

15" vs. 16" or larger wheels?

Also, what do ya'll think of Treadwrights? They've got a new design out, all new from bead to bead. Pretty good prices for a 285/70R17 in load range D. Casey

15" vs. 16" or larger wheels?

Yeah, that's what I'm starting to think. What about 17's? I've found several set of OEM 17" take offs in good shape.... any reason not to go with 17's vs. 16's? I know the tires are just a little more expensive for 17's, but there's also a chance that 16" offerings are going to start...

15" vs. 16" or larger wheels?

Thanks for the tips, guys. I've been advised that 12.50 wide tires may not ride as smoothly and handle as well as a narrower tire. I do believe that the 285/76R16 tire would be a perfect fit for what I need, and be a bit narrower (around 11.50) than the 12.50 tire. I hadn't really considered...
