Roof mounted vs freestanding solar panels? Looking for recommendations

I went with a free-standing panel that I mount on the roof! The panel slides into a locking rack - it's up there and working all the time. If/when I need to park someplace without good sun access, the panel slides out and I can put it wherever I like.

Adventure Tool Company's (ATC) 4wd Provan Tiger adventures

Formula Ford 1600s. Specifically, 1990's Euroswifts. We typically run in a series that takes all eras of 1600 FFs and levels the playing field by putting everyone on the same (crappy) street tire. VERY competitive class.

Adventure Tool Company's (ATC) 4wd Provan Tiger adventures

Yeah, one of the orgs we've run with also has closed-wheel classes and we've seen EZ-ups do real damage to deep six-figure carbon-bodied touring cars. FFs are positively cheap in comparison.

Adventure Tool Company's (ATC) 4wd Provan Tiger adventures

When we race Formula Fords out in the desert, the only way to keep those shades from blowing away is that one side gets strapped to the car hauler and all the other posts get ratchet-strapped to full fuel jugs or a stack of spare tires. Even then, it's occasionally dicey.

full size frame twist and implications to campers

The problem with trying to stiffen the frame can be that you just move the stress to another place. That said, Alaskan campers have a better reputation than most (except maybe Four Wheel Campers) for withstanding the rigors of offroad use.

Solar and ARB installer Recommendations: San Diego

I've been happy with the axle work I had done at San Diego Gear and Axle (in El Cajon). The other big place is Pro Gear in Kearney Mesa. There are certainly others, too. Honestly the biggest question will be how tall your camper is and whether it fill fit in their bay. (SD G&A's bay isn't...

    Quad bunks in Van?

Wilderness Vans has all their floor plans posted - great for getting ideas, and several of them sleep four: https://www.wildernessvans.com/conversions/floor-plans/

    SOLD EarthCruiser MOD 300 Camper

Oooh, I've always liked these. I was talking to Earthcruiser about one of the last ones they had on-hand when things got all COVID-complicated. One question I haven't been able to answer yet - can you comment on how much the flip-over upper bunk covers the lower bunk? And how much overhead...

Chevy Roadtrek 190 Weldtec Lift and Lockers Questions

It all looks pretty good for your stated use, except as others have noted, you'll want to re-gear for the tires. ALSO - I'd have a long, hard think about that Yukon locker. I'm sure it's a quality unit, and under the right circumstances it will probably work exactly as advertised, but I have...

    Which propane camping fire

Did you just wake up this morning and decide to search for every post relating to campfires so you could post a link to this video? I see the same basic message posted in at least five threads - including one that had been inactive for fourteen years. This isn't the place to try to drive...

    Batteries for portable pack

Generally, the highest charge density is going to be the most expensive solution. If you want MAX AH, you're going to pay. Sounds like more realistically you're interested in a good AH/dollar ratio.

    Batteries for portable pack

Battery "Group" numbers are, amongst other things, a classification of dimensions. Anything tagged as "Group 31" should fit into the volume defined for Group 31 batteries. (This also specifies the arrangement/placement of the battery terminals.) This is how your local Auto parts store knows...

    2021 Ram 2500 diesel Prospector

I'm outlining new rig options myself and this is the same thing I keep running into. Modern trucks (all makes) all seem absolutely HUGE now. I think a lot of it is recent design trends with respect to pedestrian safety, etc., because overall the trucks aren't that much longer or wider than...

    INEOS Grenadier

From a lot of the reporting, (including the Overland Journal podcast), it seems the first target market is NGOs in Africa, etc. - a pick-up is a non-starter in many of those areas for multiple reasons (dust, security, overall size). Strictly speaking, the US domestic market (and US truck...

2021 Savana 2500 2.8l Duramax, Tufport Van top. Sportsman/Clydesdale 4x4. Why or why not?

You know, with the current E-series and Transit cutaways, this would be a pretty easy thing to put together. I'd be looking into it if we didn't absolutely need seating for a 3rd passenger. (Jumpseat options pretty limited for the C&C vans due to depth of cab and doghouse, etc.)

    New Bronco

That's probably why Ford is being so delicate and forthright about the messaging. The whole sales-life of this Bronco could be tainted by an (apparently) minor production issue from a supplier.

So it sounds like Ford is acknowledging a problem with the molded-color Hard tops: https://jalopnik.com/ford-is-embarrassed-by-the-ford-bronco-hard-top-problem-1847485040 Anyone seen this?

    Thin LiFePO4 Batteries

Well that's pretty awesome. I've got a space under my van that's just SCREAMING to have a custom-shaped pack stuffed into it. About 4" wide, 32" long, and 5" to 9" deep, depending on where I want to draw a line for mounting hardware. I kinda wish the included BMS had bluetooth, but I can...

    Desert Turtle - M1010 Build

Looks great, Mike! I'm guessing with the final spacing you've compensated for flooring and insulation stack up? (It does look taller than your original mock-up.) Looks like that welder takes both 120 and 240v input - which are you using? (Asking because I like the idea of being able to...
