    Herbie's Chevy Astrolander/ZMB Build Thread

Weekend Projects, continued In a previous tweak, I'd added a bit of table rail to the rack on the rear door. Being able to wedge the adjustable leg onto the bumper was fine, but it meant I couldn't access the rear of the van while the table was in use. To fix this, I welded up a little drop...

    Herbie's Chevy Astrolander/ZMB Build Thread

Weekend Projects Replaced the broken passenger dash grab handle: We don't usually use it for actually, you know, grabbing, but in its broken state it was rattling on the freeway and driving me nuts. I think it got cracked by swiveling the passenger seat into it while camping - I'll be...

Can You ATW A 1995 Chevy?

Yeah, nothing is impossible - it's just something to highlight since you were specifically asking about ATW travel. Money solves a lot of problems, so build whatever you like if you're willing to pay extra get to get it shipped. Alternatively, keep your goals domestic, and a bigger truck might...

Total Composites Slide In Camper Kits

Looks good. Just a head's up that they're not doing you any favors by ignoring customer inquiries, though. I'll try again to contact them via the form on your page, but I know I'm among a handful of people who've had no response from them...

Can You ATW A 1995 Chevy?

Other limiting factors for ATW travel might be the length and height. If you will cross the Darien gap or go to Europe/Asia, a 20' shipping container is likely in your future. A stock Extended-cab short-bed will barely fit (232" internal length max), and a longbed will not. The height of the...

Is it possible? Flatbed Camper + Dirtbike

I think it's just a matter of geometry. You need have the bike clear the back of the camper, so either you need it to sit farther aft, or a little lower down. Depending on the easiest way to tie into the Truck frame, just do it in the way that has the shortest lever arms...

    Alu-Cab Khaya Camper 2 Sleeper

Looks great! Is there room for a porta-potti in that rearmost-driver's side storage area? (High on the list of must-haves for the Mrs.)

Is it possible? Flatbed Camper + Dirtbike

I think it should be doable, given how high the tray and "hump" usually is on a flatbed. It would mean sacrificing departure angle, of course... A little googling gets me to this: Which doesn't look particularly complicated.

True 4 Season Off Grid Travel Trailer

Nothin' I couldn't fix with a sawzall and some sikaflex. ;) For real, though, I think TC could absolutely spec-up a kit for a chassis-mount cabin. I reached out to my "local" TC affiliate a few months back without any response, but at some point, someone will make it happen.

True 4 Season Off Grid Travel Trailer

Looks great. Makes me want to slap that box on the back of a cab-n-chassis truck.

2021 Savana 2500 2.8l Duramax, Tufport Van top. Sportsman/Clydesdale 4x4. Why or why not?

Yep. <16' long and rides and sleeps four. There are days when I wish I had the extra couple of feet of a SWB Express/Savanna, but overall, we're happy.

Planning Power Needs for One Week Trip

Not sure I understand the setup with respect to how stuff is setup vis a vis your monitors here, but add all those up and it's 438 watts. That seems light, though, since the Schumacher alone should be north of 180w. I'm guessing that worst case, the inverter will just limit overall current to...

    Chinook Pop-Top 4x4 on newer '93 Toyota chassis - $33k

You think the price is high? Find another 4x4 Toyota Chinook or Sunrader. Those things are unicorns. I'd already have this one if it had better provisions for a 3rd family member.

Planning Power Needs for One Week Trip

I don't think this post got enough attention. That 400w inverter is small - almost tiny. It will almost certainly fail to simultaneously run the schumacher and charge the GZ, let alone also power the ARB during that time. I suggest rigorous testing - and I mean actually partially discharging...

    Weight

Yes, "but". While a MFG can opt to down-rate a rating for marketing/legal/tax purposes, they'd be straight-ass stupid to over-spec the rating based on the components. In other words, there are plenty of trucks out there that can likely safely haul more payload than what's on the door sticker...

New to campers and surprised by the high prices. How come a camper is half the cost of a car?

I was going to say. Any camper that would functionally replace my current one would be at least as much as a luxury automobile - the kind of thing that comes with Nürburgring times...

Cool 7.3 4x4 Flat bed hard sided pop up

That's rad. The rust can be handled. Hell, swap in a new frame if you have to, and you'd still be ahead on the camper build alone.
