Camping Totes or Dry Food Storage

Another tip for anyone who doesn't want to spend the money on new corrugated plastic: The 2020 election cycle is ramping up, which means roadside campaign sign breeding season is upon us. Very soon, there will be a whole fresh crop of corrugated plastic to harvest. Note that the wire "pegs"...

Camping Totes or Dry Food Storage

Counterpoint: my 15-gallon plastic tub with movable dividers weighs ~5lbs, about the same as a single 50-cal steel ammo can (that has 1/8th the internal volume). I'm all for protecting my food, but there's a level of overkill I can't justify when it comes to weight.

Camping Totes or Dry Food Storage

I use a Sterilite tote, which isn't important, except that it's a good fit for the under-bed storage area in my van, and it's lightweight. For me the critical thing is that my chips don't get crushed and the bread doesn't get squished. My solution for this is my low-budget "TrekPak"-like...

    Testing camping with an infant

One other bit of advice: Make sure you're really happy with your rig by the time kiddo is about 4-5 years old. After that, the kid imprints on the vehicle and will never let you sell it until they move away to college...

    Testing camping with an infant

Gotta start 'em young! Infants and crawlers are easy. Bipeds require a bit more division of labor as you'll find one parent will spend most available time keeping the toddler out of danger. Once they get to the point that you can trust them not to wander off or play in the cactus, its back...

    2001 Tiger Provan CX 4x4 - 43K Miles

As with all things, pursue to your own comfort level, but never send any money. I find that the query "I will be in your area visiting cityx next week, when can I come see it?" is almost universally met with radio silence.

Introducing the “NEW” Alu-Cab Canopy Camper

She's young and small at the moment, but the pesky kid refuses to stop growing. If I'm realistic, I need to plan for a 6'+ bed length (and matching internal bench length), since there's an almost even chance I'll end up on the bottom bunk at some point. (Mostly because I'm the early riser, etc.)

Introducing the “NEW” Alu-Cab Canopy Camper

I like it! I'm studying everyone's interior builds since we need a 2+1 sleeping solution. Anything that looks like it'll support bringing the kiddo is a plus.

Is 4x4 really necessary for a cabover build?

Ditto this. My 4WD conversion was more about slowing down. I don't have enough travel to rock crawl or run prerunner speeds through the desert. There's a dearth of locker choices for the rear of my rig anyhow. But I can easily switch to 4LO and just plod along over uneven terrain without...

Why NOT use the stock spare tire location on a pickup truck?

One of the advantages of the 5-tire rotation scheme is that it forces me to run my tire winch up and down every so often. Maintaining the winch assembly is just like any other part of the van, so no issues with the winch or cables here. The main reason I stay away from a swing-away tire...

Custom Four Wheel Camper Flatbed Build For Sale.

What's the state of this, now? You indicated "a few things to wrap up", and the visible interior photos look to be early in the process. Thanks!

Lag bolt length for tent stakes

This thread is the reason why I have a whole bin full of all kinds of different stakes - there is no ONE perfect stake - too much depends on the kind of earth you're trying to secure into. The stakes I use most often are perfect for the coarse sand of my local deserts and our fine beachfront...

Nissan throws in the towel, ending US production of NV and NV200

If the AWD 1500s were still being made, I'd fight you, but it's hard to muster much enthusiasm for the current crop.

    Roof bags?

I like soft bags for the weight savings. My "roof basket" is actually a Harbor Freight trailer-hitch cargo basket with all the hitch parts removed (I put my roof on a diet and a small basket forces me to keep the weight down.) The upside of using a hitch basket as a roof basket is that there...

    Pop-ups with inside showers?

I would examine that assumption carefully - lots of full timers find that an indoor shower isn't worth the space/weight/water-use penalties. In most cases it's a shower pan with a curtain track on the ceiling. I have seen some slide-ins with a dedicated wet-bath, but they're usually the kind...

Nissan throws in the towel, ending US production of NV and NV200

I kinda wonder what the point of the truck-chassis was if they never bothered to sell one with more truck parts. I always assumed the 4x4 bits would be coming "next year", but here we are at the end of a many-year run and they never materialized.

    Alaskan Dinette Bed Frustration

Sorry I don't have an inkling on how to help, but wanted to say that's a gorgeous package. I would have assumed the two cushions would wedge down into that space, but from the photos they look wide for that. I'm guessing you've tried setting them into the space at and angle like this "_/\_"...
