As someone who went through a similar process a few years ago, I recommend one of two approaches:
1) Continuing your search and just spending the money to get a completed/engineered RnR system from someone. Pay the shipping if you must.
2) Find a van converter to build you just the bed system...
Well, you certainly invented a whole backstory there to go with the original premise. Obviously the rig is maintained. My general lack of mechanical field issues over 10 years of ownership was built right into my initial post. Nowhere did I say "double the tool budget", the only things that...
So I thought I'd start a discussion to see if people might want to admit (or at least be open to the idea) that some of us carry more tools than might be necessary.
I was very inspired by Jonathan Hanson's writings on his tool kit back when I got started in Overlanding, and I've definitely...
Also, do the requisite reading on electric (peltier) coolers vs compressor fridges - you'll probably decide that even if you did have a proper power hookup, it's not worth the massive power draw for the performance.
There's also a group that likes to bag mountain peaks and contacts in the same trip. There are a few videos of guys working 5w handheld contacts from some tall peaks and hitting really extraordinary distances.
There's a reason the radio antenna on the front-right corner of my van is the tallest element by a few inches.... and visible from the driver's position.
Depends a lot on the enforcement priorities of the place you're visiting. The bear-country NPs and SPs I've visited would definitely cite you for improper food storage if they caught you doing this. Presence of people may deter animals, but presence of food creates a competing incentive...
Oh that part's easy - it's coming up with a shape for a side-handle that doesn't interfere on the curve of the cooking surface and also still fits into my BROG Skottle bag - that's the tricky part.
If you haven't already read this article, it's probably the most authoritative on the subject given the experiences of the author:

How much time do you spend on the can that you need that space to be heated and cooled?
Serious question. There's "comfort while roughing it", then there's "ridiculous expenditure of resources for limited gain". For comfort, especially in the middle of the night, we carry a PortaPotti in...
The Livin Lite "Quicksilver" Truck Camper is along those lines.

The only negative on the Roadtreks are that they tend to be built low to the ground. Skirts cover the lowered tanks (water and fuel) and house a lot of storage. These compromise clearance and aren't readily removable if you're looking to actually gain ground clearance for off-road work.
A follow up: Could you possibly provide the following three measurements?
Like I say, we need a 2+1 sleep solution so I'm trying to gauge feasibility...
Thanks!
IMHO, if you're looking for a quick grill and pack-up arrangement, a gas grill is probably a better choice. Coal/ash management is enough of a problem that some people blow it even when they cook dinner and have all night and still manage to leave a smoldering fire the next day. I can't...
The platform is for the cabover-cab clearance, yes?
I wasn't really in the market, and LA is a bit farther from CA than I'm prepared to try to travel right now, but I'm keeping an eye on this as I really like the Khaya but the only way one will work for us is to build out the interior ourselves...
Also, be mindful of the power-up procedures of your Solar controller. Most (all?) REQUIRE that you connect the controller to the battery FIRST, then Panels. If you can find a way to connect the panels with an open switch on the battery, then you run the risk of damaging the controller.
It's small, but no worse than the old Tiger XLs they used to build on the Astro/Safari platform. I'd be very surprised if it couldn't be made right, if anything were wrong with it.
More than likely, the problem is a mismatch of expectations. Tigers aren't Earthroamers (especially this size...
It can be done, if the kids aren't too big and you pack light. A local club member did a family of 5 in an XJ for multiple years, and that was with at least 2 car seats or boosters. They used every trick, though, like packing the rear foot wells under the kids feet, etc.
