Dave is FULL of good information. I just want to sit down, hang out, drink Cointreau and just solder random stuff with the guy. I think he does this for a living and not just a hobby like me.
Sometimes I think I get better range on simplex than with repeaters with my Larsen 2/70SH.
All joking aside, I get 5 miles on UHF(3/4) with simplex and 8 miles on VHF(1/4) simplex. (Southeastern US, lots of rolling hills and heavy vegetation.) One of the towers near my home that has VHF/UHF...
Mod the 70cm radio to transmit on GMRS, keep mouth shut about it. Besides, it is really isn't any more illegal than using a Part 90 radio on GMRS after the reg update 2 years ago...*
*I am in no way shape or form condoning an act that may be interpreted as illegal.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't 5/8 over 5/8 wave or 5/8 over 1/2 wave collinear antannas work decent without ground planes?
Also, I have an antenna that is 3/4 on UHF and I sweat that thing talks to clouds.
I agree, but there wasn't really a good market for GMRS radios to choose from back then. Midland didn't have their mobile units available yet and these cheap Chinese UHF mobile and HT units weren't really that prevalent either. Ten years ago the GMRS options were virtually limited to getting a...
And it doesn't annoy my wife as much when I use one on her minivan.
I haven't really experienced any downsides yet. I did have a 5/8 wave antenna on there and I honestly haven't noticed any difference in range. Realistically, a person isn't going to get too much extra range with a high-gain...
I, like many hams (K4WGA) also have a GMRS license (WRCY713). I view GMRS basically as CB's with less noise, and they are good for family and vehicle communications. Plus I can get a phantom antenna on my wife's minivan without her getting pissed at me.
I do own a Midland MXT115 and an MXT275...
The right answer is to use what people around you use. If everyone uses GMRS, use GMRS. If everyone uses Amateur (Ham) Radio, use Amateur Radio. If everyone uses CB's, convince them to convert to Amateur Radio.
My preference is Amateur Radio, although I do have a GMRS license as well. The...
CB is 4 watts so it isn't going to have much waste heat. A 50 watt 2m, 70cm or GMRS rig will have quite a bit more at that power.

I don't know of anything for specific radio models. However, try thingverse.com for some 3d printer files, somebody may have made one already.
Also, when dash mounting a radio like that, be mindful of heat build up.

Rebadged, warranteed by an American company that you can call and get a native English speaker, AND 40 bucks cheaper than the Anytone model with a discount code.
Just a head's up, Anytone isn't really a "cheap Chinese" company. They are light-years ahead of Baofeng and the other no-name brands...
I have one. I put it on a meter and compared it to a standard UV-5R. The power output on "High" and "Low" were identical. The 8HP has a firmware setting that allows a "Mid" output of 2-3 watts.
