The manual for that radio has the pin-out for the RS-232 in it. No need to spend $35 when you can make one for significantly less money and very little time. Someone at your local radio club probably has the parts laying around and will give them away.
Dreadlocks, that is a damn fine idea. I recently purchased what I believe is the same antenna in CaptainChaos's (The midland 5/8 wave GMRS) for my wife's van and it has a very, very stout rod of stainless steel as the whip. Stout enough to maybe act as a can opener on her roof.
I noticed that, but right now it is $40 cheaper than the AT-778UV and you have an American customer service number to call. I mean, just an actual customer service department is good...
Everyone here is going to have a different opinion, but if it were me I would begin by evaluating what my goals are. Are you doing this just for trail comms? Are you wanting to do D-Star? What kind of digital modes are popular in your area? Do you need APRS? What will you use APRS for?
Right...
It looks like it's about 20 bucks cheaper than the Anytone model on amazon.

I forgot to change the battery in my head and missed that. I just went with a 115. I kinda wish they would at least let us order the backordered 275 with the discount code and just wait for it.
Anyway, did you see that Anytone 2m/70cm clone they re-branded? Kinda has me curious...

Nice to know. I noticed that I was not able to purchase an MXT275, is that unit sold out or backordered?
Also, when does that discount code expire?

And now that there is no explicit exemption for Part 90 equipment, technically almost every repeater is illegal now.

I don't know exactly what happens with FFC license fees. What I do know is that when the US Forest Service sells timber harvested from the site that I work on (Owned by US Dept. of Energy) that money goes straight to the treasury. Also, when any one up us Federal employees serves on jury duty we...
First off, why did you follow me here from www.TheNewX.org?
Now, back to posting something with a point: The United States has reciprocal agreements with almost the entire planet for licensed Amateur Radio operators. http://www.arrl.org/bilateral-reciprocal-agreements
GMRS does not.
I would like to see your repeater set up. I wouldn't mind making one of my own some day.
As far antennas, I would probably just make a 1/4 wave with a N-Female chassis connector and some 14 AWG solid wire for the antenna and radials. Shoot it up into a tree with some fishing line.

You could spend $55.95 on that, or you could spend $6.29 and just bolt one of these into the track on the rack or just put it in the hood lip and use a 1/2 wave antenna to not worry about ground plane...

X2.
I was thinking of just using 12v battery charger. Would I have to put a resistor somewhere or a diode to prevent feedback?
EDIT:
Something like this.
