The Road Chose Me tackles Iceland

EIMSKIP is "THE" shipping line of Iceland. They run a container ship weekly from the east coast of North America to Iceland and back. It leaves from Portland, ME and Halifax, NS, Canada every week. I paid $3,350 inside a 20 footer. It was slightly less than double that for a return trip...

The Road Chose Me tackles Iceland

Hi Everyone, As many people know the "F" roads in Iceland are remote gravel roads that lead to stunningly beautiful places. After hanging out with a few locals and getting the real info, I learn there are a ton of Jeep tracks that conncet the F roads together that are much more remote, wild and...

Factory single cab Gladiator with a Morgan Olson aluminum box

The pass through is really nice too. We don't climb through it often, but we put gear on the front seats basically every time we're in the back as additional storage to free up "people space" in the back. -Dan

Factory single cab Gladiator with a Morgan Olson aluminum box

To my eye, that looks like the "closeout kit" GR8Tops is releasing for the JL and JT to turn both of them into two doors. If something like that had existed a few years ago I probably would have tried to build my camper on a JT. -Dan

The Road Chose Me tackles Iceland

Cheers. I just posted over there, hopefully people find all the info about shipping helpful. Yes. I started work on The Road Chose Me Volume 3 (Australia) and have it about half done... but then I got a little sidetracked building a Jeep camper, then having a baby, then going to Iceland and...

    Gr8t Tops JTRUK

VERY interesting. The ability to turn a Gladiator into a 2 door is a HUGE development, and the complexity and cost of doing so ourselves is a big reason we didn't build our camper on a Gladiator. Now that kit exists it's a very, very tempting path to go down! -Dan

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

I should add another reason I want a diesel vehicle is that in essentially every country I've ever been to, diesel is at worst the same price as gas, often cheaper. In many countries it's about half price. -Dan

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

The engine in the diesel Gladiator / Wrangler is a VM Motori (italian) V6 3.0. It has the ZF 8HP75 auto transmission. Extremely good transmission used on an insane number of vehicles all around the world. Same engine newer Grand Cherokees, RAM 1500, etc. I think it's no longer in any of those...

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

Not when aired down to 18psi and crossing well over 1200 extremely soft sand dunes. (Also that was a Gladiator, but I bet a Wrangler would have been very similar) I just had the EcoDiesel Wrangler in the dunes in the Sahara, mileage was close to 20 while aired down in the very, very soft sand...

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

For me it's about mileage. For the long distance remote crossings I like to make (i.e. world's most remote road video below), I have to carry an insane about of gasoline when the vehicle gets around 11 US mpg. With my diesel Wrangler I'm getting 22 -25 US MPG. Secondly, the diesel...

modern diesel for overlanding in developing countries - post your solutions

I'm in Tunisia now, and both Shell and Total stations here sell diesel "Sans Sulphur". I have no idea what it's sulphur content actually is, but my 2021 Wrangler EcoDiesel seems to be loving it. I am adding some HotShots everyday diesel treatment to every tank, and I'm getting 24-28mpg...

All the major US and European automakers are stuck in 1960s management with 1980 engineering. They're all dead companies walking, or at least until the next bailout. -Dan
