    FOUND Vans For Sale!

Yeah, I'm still wondering just HOW difficult a subframe swap really is. At that price, it's not cheap enough to buy just to transplant the top stuff onto an AWD van (especially now that I know how much work that involves). It'll make an excellent "weekender" type setup for someone who will use...

    House vs Awesome van...

Yeah, there have been days I regretted selling vehicles, and there have been days I regretted buying "too much" house, but there is definitely happy ground in the middle. Buying "enough" house, then saving for a replacement 'budget' adventure vehicle is probably the way to have your cake and...

    FOUND Vans For Sale!

Found on Craigslist, no relation: I think it's a pretty good deal, I wouldn't sell mine anywhere near that cheap! http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/nvn/rvs/4622620862.html

Fold Down Spare Tire Carrier, Frontier

Reading the summary of that guy's work sounds like he's hit all the high points: Will the weight of tire attached to the tailgate be too much for the tailgate latches? Will you be able to lift the tire assembly up to that position while you try to latch it? Will you be able to reach behind the...

Have to ask...but not sure which category...Potty breaks?

Finally went back far enough to find a decent picture of the Thetford. This is the smallest model: You can see the riser it sits on. That goes over the top when driving and allows me to strap everything down. Doubles as a center console when I put a little cubby tray on it too.

Have to ask...but not sure which category...Potty breaks?

On more serious note: We keep a Thetford 135 porta potti in the van, between the front seats. While driving, it is covered with a box that makes it look like a center console. When camping, it sits ON the box to raise it up a few inches.

Very small fuse for panel meter?

Looks like I'm answering my own questions today. Don't I have a day job? Anyway, the answer to this one is "Sort Of" - I've found several people who have managed to cut the positive bus bar in their BlueSea blocks, but most tend to split it in half...

Very small fuse for panel meter?

OK, more relentless googling has turned up this: At least this would let me secure the holder to the same mounting panel as everything else...

Very small fuse for panel meter?

I'm hoping someone here can point me to a very small fuse holder or something similar that will be unobtrusive to install. Preferably something I can mount? My google-**** is failing me... I've got a nice tidy installation with a Blue Sea fuse block right now, so I'm loathe to go back to using...

    Van front suspension thoughts

With a vehicle with that much side profile and weight up-top, I imagine it's purely about road manners at speed. I follow the TigerRV forum and a lot of owners with Van-based ClassBs tend to fit them to settle things down for highway driving. A quick-disconnect linkage would solve any issue...

    How to carry spirits

Just a personal update - I've been using a variety of the spun stainless and aluminum bottles for a while now. Up until my most recent trip, I've had no incidents, but I've recently gotten very blase' about mixing/matching caps and bottles (moving sports tops to insulated bottles, or whatever)...

Help me figure out my house battery system...

Generally, it's OK to measure against chassis ground - so find any clean, unpainted screw, bolt or other bit of chassis. If you see a bolt with a lot of black wires all going into it, that's one of the factory ground points and is a good choice. The red lead will then read your +V at various...

Liquid fuel stoves - alternatives to coleman?

Back from beach trip. 7 out of 11 meals were done on butane, though that's more like 11 "sessions" since I had to boil 2x kettles of water for each morning's coffee, and a couple of the meals were extended cook times (browning potatoes, etc.) I started with one slightly-used caninster and...

    Wine storage solution

I bought a 4-pack of the Platypus Platypreserve wine bags: These get squished into the corners or gaps of the dry-goods tub. (Plus one white directly into the fridge to keep the Mrs. happy as soon as camp is setup.) The nice thing about these vs. buying wine directly in a bag is that you can...

    Bottle Jack Vs Stock Jack

Seconded. Add the "Jackstand Adapter" baseplate if you have the room. The "small" jackstand adapter fits into the same carry bag as the rest of the gear. I was able to fit an 8T craftsman bottle jack and all of my tools (in rolls) into the cubby for the OEM scissor jack. The Bogart safe-jack...

    Living inside vs beside

Ditto this. The first outing in our pop-top converted van, it took nearly an hour to setup camp and the better part of 2 hours to strike camp again the next morning. WAAAAY too long. I've been slowly eliminating all the inefficiencies that I can - changing how and where stuff stows, what gear...

    Autohome customer service

I have found Mike and Autohome USA's customer service to be top notch. They are busy folks, and on occasion when I have called the phones are being forwarded to somebody's cell, and that person is out in the field (actually USING their product), but I have always had return calls after leaving...

    Boomer the Quadravan 4x4 Camper

Holy hell. I've never seen a "real" Pathfinder front setup in that kind of clarity. I've heard it described and seen the drawings, which is one thing, but seeing it "uncovered" like that really shows the wackiness of that design. Yeah, now I understand why everyone says those things have no...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

I'm going to reserve judgement until Part 2, but I see many flaws with the drawing in Part 1.

Liquid fuel stoves - alternatives to coleman?

I've always managed a weekend on a single canister. That'd be 2x dinners, and 2x (coffee and breakfast). Lunches are usually "cold". I always start with a new canister, though. Typically, I then switch the used ones to "home" duty until they're empty, since I frequently use a 2nd catering...
