Toroweap - North Rim Grand Canyon

Great writeup, Dave. Glad to hear you two are still out creating inspiration for the rest of us!

OMG, that's awesome! Wish that was available here.

Basic pop-up questions- need to sleep 4. Driveway or campgrounds mostly

One thing to remember, kids grow, and fast. Make sure you factor into your purchase that you'll be soon trying to sleep 2 adults and 2 "near-adults". Once you factor in sleeping bag, etc. my 5y.o. daughter takes up almost as much room as my wife. Notes on powering A/C: A genset will be fine...

    4 x 4 Van Pictures

Oh, I am sure that Todd is aware how copyright works and isn't planning to misappropriate images belonging to others, right?

    drawer for stove

I agree Beau, fuel should always be disconnected for travel. That's one thing I like about the butane stoves: Disconnecting the fuel supply is a matter of flicking the lever. That backs the bottle away just far enough that it separates from the inlet, but the bottle stays with the stove...

Now THAT sounds slick. We'll be needing a detail photo of that arrangement!

    Herbie's Chevy Astrolander/ZMB Build Thread

Yeah, still underneath. It's a calculated risk, for sure, but I definitely don't have room inside. That's one reason I took the non-invasive approach with the rack - maybe someday I'll build a proper swing away bumper...

    a little aluminum advice please!

No reason not to, if you can afford the price difference and have the capability to weld aluminum. Aluminum tube will be considerably more expensive per lineal foot, generally. More importantly, welding aluminum is tricky at best. Usually the material is factory heat-treated, so you must...

    a little aluminum advice please!

There is a long history of race cars built by riveting aluminum sheet to welded tube-steel frames. Take a look at every Lotus-7 and every Locost clone built in the last 50+ years. The issue of galvanic corrosion is overstated, at a minimum. Yes, it is something that happens, but some basic...

    Herbie's Chevy Astrolander/ZMB Build Thread

Just realized I've not been keeping my built thread in-sync. I've written this up in more detail elsewhere, but I want my build thread to have all the relevant projects in one place. Therefore, here are a couple photos on how I built a rear carrier rack for fuels and my Trasharoo: I...

    Scotch Sundays. Bring it.

Mine too, but I have to keep a selection on-hand for the rest of the family. Several other scotch-drinkers in different groups, and everybody prefers something different. The upside? Not too often I find someone else getting into my Balvenie.

    Deciding on sleep bags (budget)

How infrequent is your camping? If you have a good tent, and you aren't going more than a few times a year, why not just use sheets and blankets from home? (A decent wool blanket and a flannel sheet set is more than warm enough for the weather you're describing...

    Black Friday Ambo

Agreed. I have three such boxes of different sizes/configurations, and now I'm thinking they all need the same treatment. If only "regular" paint would stick better when they flex...

    Rear Cargo Shelf

Ehhh, in my opinion you don't want carpet with a latex backing for anything where you need it to conform to shapes. Also, that stuff breaks down and leaves the pebbly residue.

Looking for Ideas on a Budget Adventure Travel Van

More research will help you adjust some of your expectations. $5k-$7k fully outfitted means you're into "older" equipment, for sure. You're talking about maybe a couple of thousand dollars for the base vehicle purchase. 17+ MPG isn't going to be easy on anything too big, or too old. These...

    Rear Cargo Shelf

This is the carpet I've been using at several points in my build: http://www.yourautotrim.com/80wideozite.html I've used it on a bed/cargo platform, and to wrap around the various boxes I've built. The nap is a bit more "plush" than the cheap speaker-box stuff, and so far it's wearing very...

    Edgestar Fridge Modifications Thread

Rockhounder, have any specs on your batteries? You say two deep cycle batteries, but don't list an Amp-Hour rating, or even a size. I can reliably run my FP430 on a single group34M (68AH) deep cycle AGM for at least a day and a half. With solar, I go much longer.
