Off the top of my head I am thinking the same size as an old CJ3 axle so any of the sites that sell those parts will have the size. There are plenty of the sites. I will try and look it up later.
Have fun and let the building and the photos begin.
It is looking great!!!
Nice job on the tailgate. That is always a tough issue as the tub can flex once that is cut. The crossbar looks like the perfect solution. You are making mine look bad; I am going to have to quit putting it off and get back to work on mine.
Keep the photos coming.
I am very interested in the actuators. As you may recall I cut the annex to make it fit as I did not want to have to manually lift the RTT. If you come up with an easy and cost effective actuator system, you may become a god in the 416 world! I have seen a few but most have too many moving parts.
most of the one's I have seen are steel, as is mine by Sierra 4x4. I have seen a few aluminum but they seem to be more expensive then the steel ones. If you are going to consider building your own I would think about what type of rack if any and if you are planning a RTT. Load will play into...
I agree with Mark. There is a federal law somewhere that says you have to use the Harbor Freight box and attach a bottle opener somewhere on the trailer!!!!!!!!!
Just my rambling thoughts but if it hinged on the front it would not put a side load on the trailer. Some folks that have tailgates have commented about the loss of structural integrity with the tailgate and if true, an additional side load when you open the lid would not help.
The only issue I...
And let's not forget Mark's obsession for all things RED:exclaim:
No matter what color, it is a great project. Skill is not a requirement. I have been working on mine for going on 3 years now and I have the skills of a knat.
I really like the Jeep tailgate. How high did you have to raise to line up and did you just weld a piece of steel below to fill the space?
I have my lid hinges on the side and like it. It is hard to reach across to get something on the other side but I cope. The standard rule is hinges on...
Great purchase. What are planned uses as that may dictate the build and suggestions. Welcome to the best and most fustrating time of your life (in the garage).
Rims to match tow vehicle
lots of welding
even more sanding and scraping fingers and arms
more welding
finally painting (to match tow...
If you look at mine, and several others that put lids on these old trailers, you will find that we did the same thing, angle iron around the top rail. They are never really square and this method allows it to be pretty square. Also makes a more solid foundation for hinges an latches. Looks...
Nice job on the trailer so far. Since you extended the tongue and you have a welder, I too would suggest you move the box forward and get either cans or one water tank and put a pump spout on top for easy water access. You will have to weld some new supports for the box though, I think. Very...
I agree with Mark, it is easier to do the receiver while the tub is off. If you plan on anything heavier than a bike rack, the receiver and back of frame will need beefing up.
The bracket used to be made for just the 5 lbs so I put two on my M416. Now Power Tank makes one for what they call an 11 lb propane tank. The only issue with that one is that I would have to eith move my location or turn it sideways as the tank is too big for the side of my trailer due to...
I would agree with this location if you choose the side opening approach. Don't want anyone run over.
On the other hand I think that with a tailgate you may put less stress on the trailer if it is hinged at the front and opens from the rear. You could put 2 latches either side of the tailgate.
Great write-up and pictures.
Looks just like my ARB with some minor changes. So what do you think of the foam mattress. I am finding the ARB to be lacking. Of course I am old, and not very skinny. Anyone have any ideas for more cushion but still being able to leave it in when folding the...
