    Camp stoves Help!

Great info. The ability to snuff and seal up an alcohol burner with fuel still inside is sort of my holy grail. I hate it when I overestimate the fuel load and just have to let it burn after the water is boiling... Maybe I'll pick one of these up and try to leakproof it with a liberal...

    SPOT vs. PLB

According to Doug Ritter over at Equipped to Survive, one of the entities MOST active in advocacy for PLBs and the like, there is currently no REQUIREMENT that SPOT honor or respond to the alert. He suspects that this may eventually come via Goverment fiat the same way that cellphone companies...

    Yet another E350 build

I like that. If/when I ever get around to hard mounting a tank, I'll keep something like that in mind.

    SPOT vs. PLB

That sounds like a PLK trail for a PLB that doesn't have GPS built in - i.e. one that relies on the doppler shift of the signal to the satellites to calculate origin. Most PLBs in the last few years have included a built-in GPS receiver and the alert message transmitted on the 406MHz band...

    SPOT vs. PLB

One other quick note regarding the SPOT system: All of the early SPOTs (and I believe most current SPOTs except for the new DeLorme inReach) use the same Globalstar satellite constellation that everyone above was warning you about with respect to satphones. The market is definitely changing...

    Camp stoves Help!

Those are commonly known as "Esbit" stoves, for the fuel they burn. I've used them, but I don't really love them. The fuel is relatively compact and it lights easily, but it's expensive in terms of cost per meal worth of cooking. Also, they're really only good for boiling water for wet meals...

    Tiger (GT and XL) Hunting

I agree, it's got the old nose, for sure. It wouldn't surprise me if it was CONVERTED by GTRV in 1996, since a lot of the parts I see (including the awning) look a lot like those on my 1995 GTRV donor.

    Raptors having frame issues

According to RaptorForumz members who were in attendance at the event in question (via Jalopnik: http://jalopnik.com/5820104/are-ford-raptor-frames-too-weak-for-off+roading) "While it was not a challenging route we took, we caught quite a bit of air, jumped the road, hit numerous G-Outs at...

Looking for info on a lift

Zuren, the Astro van body lift has the same issue with the fan shroud clearance. Do a search on AstroSafarivans.com and you'll see lots of pictures. Most people (myself included) just trim the bottom section of the fan shroud. One ASV poster recently said that he put spacer tubes (made from...

    Astro/safari interior configuration

No problem, too awesome not to share! Aaron over at ASV says rock rails will help with that. I hope so, my driveway is on a slope in two directions so I have trouble getting the dutch door to close right if I back into the driveway!

Brainstorming the mounting of the sofa bed

Zuren, this seems to happen to all of us. I know of at least one other guy on AstroSafariVans whose bed lined up with the rails - apparently he welded blind nuts in somehow. Predictably, my dodge conversion-van bed lined up in the same way on my Astro. In my case, the holes lined up more or...

National Luna: Kit vs. Component Cost

16mm^2 cable is roughly equivalent to AWG 5: http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/awg-wire-gauge-d_731.html (which is a bit undersized for long runs given the loads such a circuit might see - definitely too small if you're planning on using a winch or other high-current loads supplemented by the...

    Astro/safari interior configuration

Interesting! Must be a year-to-year thing. My 2003 only had one sliding bench, and the front seats only have one armrest on the inboard sides. Most other vans I've seen have two armrests.

    Astro/safari interior configuration

I took out my stock Astro seats and put a fold-flat bed/bench from a conversion van in between where the second and third rows would be. My setup is semi-permanent, but I could pull the six bolts and undo a few other connections and put the two stock benches back in. If you were going to...
