I wasn't trying to be patronising. It was an honest question which probably has a reasonable answer. It's an extreme drive to do in 9 days and I'm curious about the motivation.
That's correct. I followed steven Stewart's advice when shipping between Europe and the US, I locked the camper and hid a key for it in the cab. I told the shipping agent where I'd hidden it so that if customs needed access they could retrieve the key themselves. Between Southampton and...
Are you planning to spend more time exploring on the way back? 9 days to cover 6,000 miles seems like a good way of not seeing any of the places that you're driving through! 10+ hours behind the wheel each day surely doesn't leave much time for sightseeing or exploring?
I have 2 radiators, a towel rail and a calorifier on my Webasto Thermo 50 and it doesn't have enough area to use all of the heat from the Webasto. It also doesn't heat the camper enough when outside temps are really low. At some point in the future I'm going to try and retrofit a fan matrix...
How do you top up the coolant? Surely it will all flood out of the rad cap when you open it? Do you have a separate header tank in the camper which you fill the whole system from?
It can be useful in campers if the height of the highest point in the camper heating system is above the header tank in the truck cooling system. If that is the case, unless you use two separate circuits connected by a heat exchanger, you'd have to raise the height of the header tank.
What do these big ambulances get used for? In the UK ambulances are almost always based on the heavy van chassis', usually the 4.5 and 5.5 tonne Merc Sprinter. What's the GVW of this Freghtliner? Looks to be at least 20k lb?
Most ambulances in the UK are just designed to keep a patient alive...
There's might be something dragging your economy down but it's hard to compare because you were driving faster than I can in my truck (with the same engine). In my 13-14 tonne 4x2 I get 8.5 mpg in mixed driving, and more like 11.5 mpg in flat terrain on the limiter at 55 mph. Charlie gets 9 mpg...
It'll probably be the OM906la that's I've got in my truck. Let me know if you need any advice on it. It's not a particularly exciting engine but it's reliable and smooth running and service intervals are huge if you use good oils.
Great photos!
Are you familiar with the Oman Botanic Garden Project? They've already done a lot of work documenting and cultivating endemic plant species, but when the new Biomes and visitor centres open a lot of their work will be displayed for the public.
I have a couple of Lewmar Ocean hatches in my truck and the condensation is minimal. I've had no condensation on the glass (plastic), only on the aluminium frame. I do not recall it ever being bad enough to cause drips. I also have a couple of single pane glass hatches of the coach/bus type, and...
I have a switch at the main control panel so that I can easily isolate the pump in case of a plumbing failure, but I cannot see a benefit to having one at each tap.
Also, would it not be better to have a breather/overflow for the grey water tank outside the truck, so that when it's full it just...
From someone who recently drove 11,000 mile around America in a truck with a 55mph limiter, I have to agree.
We did some long stretches on the interstate (Denver to Chicago for example), and never felt in danger, or received any hostility. American drivers are generally not the most patient or...
Nice van!
When I was at Brownchurch getting a roof rack fitted to my truck, they told me that up until I arrived, the largest vehicle they'd worked on was a Vario like yours, getting fitted for a roof platform so that the police could enter properties by force through the first floor.
Maybe I'm confused, but Sika 715 is a construction product sold as part of a system of products to bridge expansion gaps in concrete/asphalt structures.
Sika 221 is the one generally used for sealing components to vehicle bodies.
