The Snorkel's relevance to North American overlanding

Most likely the guy who knows how to assess risk and capability along with how to make his own equipment more capable and less prone to ingesting water or dirt. The "hold my beer" types end up flagging the rest of us down for assistance with their broke or stuck vehicle.

The Snorkel's relevance to North American overlanding

No - this is normal stuff. If you are not moving fast in silt - well you won't be moving at all. As for that river crossing - that's me and my truck. Anyone who wants to do Mojave Road has to cross this river unless bailing out way early. And yes, proper speed to create a bow wave, but do you...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

Hey Rich - no it wasn't that 4Runner flopover - it was waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy worse. // Premier has been making these for 25 years - they have it pretty well sorted out. If something goes awry they are also pretty top notch in customer service and they are in Yucca Valley - so I can get there in...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

Thanks for the compliment. The welder - yes for emergency repairs when remote. Premier makes and sells with the welder a 195amp alternator, but mine was 225a so I kept mine and they just had to make an external resistor for it. The way it works is - they install an underhood throttle control...

The Snorkel's relevance to North American overlanding

Do you have silt in British Columbia? Have you ever driven in silt? If not, here's a few pics of what we have in the SW USA and Baja. So, where you are - you've stated no need for one, but North America is a whole lot bigger than just BC. Baja // They have something similar in AU (just to show...

    Optimizing suspension for washboard?

As others have mentioned - 1) Air down to about 25 (don't go below that if you are going to be trying to run at something above low speed); 2) 4Hi - power to the ground at both ends smoothes and stabilizes the vehicle; 3) Increase the speed (trial and error based on your setup); 4) Suspension -...

The Snorkel's relevance to North American overlanding

But by your previous definition, they would get all they need without the forward facing scoop by sucking it in from the ambient air around it. The scoop serves to funnel air and direct it into a specific spot - directly into the intake. The forward motion of the vehicle packs that scoop full of...

The Snorkel's relevance to North American overlanding

I didn't say it was better than a supercharger or turbo - that would be stupid and patently false. However, it is useful and it does aid in performance. And you are wrong about it passing over and not being used. On race cars - the underside of that scoop is sealed around the intake (carbs or...

The Snorkel's relevance to North American overlanding

My beating the dead horse comment was in reference to someone else earlier in the thread mentioning that same thing. I do think it is useful conversation because if you are exploring remotely chances are you will encounter these situations and a proper snorkel will help. And yes, I'm in SoCal -...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

Another Update: A year and a half ago, one of the more respected members of the overland community advised that one of the most valuable pieces of gear I could add to my vehicle was a Premier Power Welder as it enables the ability to weld repairs on more serious issues that could otherwise leave...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

UPDATE Time - YAY!!!!!! Once back from the big trip, I had a punch list of items to take care of from lessons learned. One of the more frustrating items was my new ARB 63L Fridge/Freezer. The night before the trip, I turned it on to get down to temp - it was at 64F. Note, when I installed it, I...

The Snorkel's relevance to North American overlanding

I'm gonna beat the hell out of this already beaten down horse. Interestingly no one on here has listed the primary reason why I put a snorkel on my Avalanche - silt. Deep, so fine it gets in every nook cranny and pore SILT!!!. Like the Taco driver above, my intake was low behind the right rear...

    My 02 Avalanche NFE

Haven't posted anything up in awhile - been slammed. Haven't done too much to the Av since we got back from the UT-CO trip other than some punch list items here and there. Although - a few big mods happening tomorrow - I'll post those up when they are done for sure. // For those of you who knew...

    Los Angeles -Class Attack Sub(urban), Build / Collected Werks topic - '02 k1500 Z71

Looking good. I'm finishing up my punchlist from the UT-CO trip. Had to do some rewiring and have some reconfig to do on what goes where, along with a couple of things to buy. I'm now on the hunt to change the interior of my Av given my driver's seat is pretty well worn and the NFE material is...

    Chevy Seat Side Airbags

I'm considering getting rid of the NFE front seats in my Avalanche and switching to an aftermarket (Corbeau or similar) and am wondering about the airbags mounted in the sides of my front seats. Does anyone know if my computer will freak out if those airbags are no longer present/connected? If...

    Is Unlocking Legal?

Thanks for the info. They all had handheld Baofeng radios. I was the only with an installed radio (and ham license to my knowledge). I do carry a Delorme InReach SE and I used that to send an SOS and details to get EMS, SAR, etc to the scene.

    4.56 vs 4.88 - 04 Tundra on 33s

2002 Avalanche with 35s, 4.88s and Doug Thorley headers. At 65mph I'm taching 2200. I had 33s with 4.10s. If you are even remotely thinking of 35s I would just go ahead go with the 4.88s. Interestingly, on my Av the calculators all recommended 4.56s with the 35s, but I knew I was adding a RTT...

    Is Unlocking Legal?

Hi All, Some of you may recall I'm a relatively new ham and the radio I purchased and installed in my vehicle is a Yaesu FTM-400XDR with a Diamond 55 antenna mounted on my roof rack. With that said, we were on a recent trip very remote. The group we were with was using 157.XXX. My radio would...

Vehicle Mapping, GPS, Emergency Comms, setup Help

Couldn't you use an InReach and pair it to a tablet with Earthmate? I actually am pretty redundant given I have purchased things one at a time over the last 3 years - so I have a Lowrance with Topo maps, InReach, and a Yaesu FTM-400/XDR radio with GPS in it. But the Lowrance paired to my i7 come...
