    Camp site suggestions West Coast

Though to get a first-come-first-serve site on a busy holiday weekend, you might have to arrive Thur or Friday early afternoon, and plan on staying put till Monday. That can apply to dispersed camping, since often the better sites are quickly taken by knowledgeable locals. In heavily forested...

    Camp site suggestions West Coast

Generally BLM lands are grass lands and desert, that is, eastern California, OR, WA. But largely because of logging and mining claims reverting back to the government during the depression, there is a good chunk of forest BLM land in southern Oregon. So the coastal mountains are mix of BLM...

    Camp site suggestions West Coast

It's something like 1300 miles via I5. Driving closer to the coast will add some miles, and more significantly slow you down (due to curves, traffic, and sightseeing). Hwy 1 past Fort Bragg will be slower than 101 inland. On RV forums hwy 20 is often recommended as the best way of crossing...

    Question: Cooking with cast iron

The common rule of thumb for baking with a DO is the diameter (inches) times 2 for the number of briquettes, with a 2/3, 1/3 top bottom distribution. The wording may vary, but that's the gist.

    pot and pans

What size of pots do you need? 2 qt, 3? What kind of stove are you using? How important is weight? My favorite GSI pot is 10" aluminum dutch oven, which has a volume of about 3 qts. I use it at home, on the stove top and oven, and in camp with coals top and bottom. I don't use in camp with...

    450lb capacity camp chair

How about a two person love-seat? A large person could straddle the center support.

What do you consider to be the best cookware kit?

Cast iron and enameled steel (the inexpensive speckled stuff) are probably the best choices for a wood fire. You definitely don't want anything plastic on the handles.

    The best freestanding shade structure?

On a cooking thread there ias talk of SnowPeak stoves. They also have some good wing tarps. They should stand up to wind quite well. Snow Peak is, if anything, over engineered. They even sell a peg hammer with a copper head.

What do you consider to be the best cookware kit?

A 10" GSI HA dutch oven gets regular use at home on the stove top and oven, along with occasional use while camping with coals.

    450lb capacity camp chair

Is width a consideration besides weight? A fabric chair with armrests wouldn't be forgiving for a person that is wider than what the designer had in mind. How about a sturdy storage box with cushion on top? It wouldn't provide a backrest, but wouldn't be constraining.

    Heavy Duty Canopies / Shelters

My impression is that the 3 leg Sun Shade is the sturdiest of the freestanding shades. Yes it will deform, or even turn turtle if not staked down, but what else can you expect. Anything can act like a sail or wing. If there is much wind, you need to stake it down well. You can attach...

    Narrow roof rack wanted

At 37", the Rola isn't much different from the Yakima Loadwarrior (44 x 39). There are quite a few baskets around the 39" width. The Basketcase is 26 x39, so can be mounted in either direction. Some like a low profile, and mount it between the cross bars. This 'jeep' basket (used to be...

    Narrow roof rack wanted

Do you want a rack or a basket? Usually 'rack' refers to the cross bars and their mounts. Have you looked at the Yakima Basketcase? You can find the dimensions on the web. I can fit it side by side with my Thule Sidekick box on 48" bars. I've also thought about using the plastic 'basket'...

    Question: Cooking with cast iron

The nostick qualities of the preseasoned Lodge pans is not perfect. Preseasoning is a start, not a substitute for years of use. Especially with the 10", I suggest a couple of months of bacon, biscuits, and cornbread, before trying eggs (especially scrambled). I still buy and use nonstick...

    Tent with shell

A tent with a connecting sleeve does not cost much more than a standalone tent of comparable size and quality. A DAK campershell tent runs about $100 It gives more space and ventilation when sleeping in the shell. It does not give you the standing room for changing. You could cover your...
