    Honda CR-V!

When going around a corner, the outside wheel travels further, so turns faster. That's the difference that an ordinary differential accommodates. It sends equal torque to both sides, but allows for different rpms. But there is also a difference between front and rear wheels. The rear ones...

    Honda CR-V!

My guess is that oil in the rear diff breaks down or gets dirty, but I don't know how or why this causes noises. I've changed mine at about 30,000 mile intervals, so have never had this problem, and can't describe them firsthand. The fluid is shared by the diff and AWD mechanism. In the AWD...

    Honda CR-V!

I have a 2003 Element and am active on the Element Owners Club forum. There's a sister CRV Owners Club forum. I used to follow an old HondaCRV forum, but don't know if that is still active. The best description of the CRV AWD mechanism is a pdf that was originally posted on a QuebecCRV forum...

Alcohol Stoves in Central & South America

It may not be definitive, but this backpakcinglight thread gives an idea of the ethanol v methanol issues http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=13830 In the US, denatured alcohol is mostly ethanol (like highproof drinkable stuff)...

Alcohol Stoves in Central & South America

Regarding Europe, the best known commercially made alcohol stove is from Sweden, Trangia. Trangia has a pdf with the name for 'mythylated spirits' in various countries. 'Alcohol de quemar' and 'metillico' are listed for South American countries. One guide book suggests pharmacies. Brazil is...

In search of the perfect can opener.

My camping can opener is a P38, with the opener on my Swiss Army knife as backup. At home I use a Kohn Rikon that splits the seam, and cost about $8 at TJMaxx.

    Mat for tent entrance?

But a mat outside the tent door, or in the vestibule, provides a clean(er) space to sit when removing the shoes, or to kneel when reaching into the tent. It helps me keep the tent shoe-free.

    Cheap interior light idea...?

Is there a problem with the tap lights as they are? I have couple in my Element for use at night when camping. I have no problems with battery life. I did notice, though, that the adhesive on the velcro ring gave way on one of the lights. I may have to figure out another way of mounting them.

How to paddle a sit on top kayak?

The boat the OP is talking about is only 9.5 ft long. It splits in 2, so you only have to have a 5ft long storage space.

    Mat for tent entrance?

another endorsement for shade cloth. I usually use it doubled. This the coarsely knit plastic fabric sold in garden centers, to provide shade over plants and people.

    Rokon Two Wheel Drive

A segment on Pawn Stars with a Rokon caught my attention several weeks ago. It was a 60s model. Restoration cost was quite a bit more than the purchase, but they still expected to clear a profit with the sale.

How to paddle a sit on top kayak?

A boat this short will have problems tracking straight. A couple of the reviews at REI mention this problem. I have an inflatable about this size, and always use the optional skeg if I want to get somewhere. Do you have the extension piece? I expect that it will track better with that in...

    Distance to nearest McDonalds

One time I picked up roasted chicken from a grocery in town on the way to a campground. In that case the campground was only 15 minutes out of town, and we needed to restock on groceries anyways.

That's on the access road to Dead Horse Point State Park (4 miles to the visitor center). However the highly visible potash ponds are only 3 miles to east as the crow flies.

    Pop-up in the rain?

I had a Wildernest in Seattle for years, and moisture eventually did it in. It wasn't so much the wet tent after camping, but condensation while closed, and through the gaskets. Also one of the side hinges eventually rusted out. The truck was parked outside all the time. A carport would have...

    Camp site suggestions West Coast

Elko is an example of a more remote, small FS campground. The one I stayed at, after Memorial day is Quosanta, with state park like facilities. It would have heavier use. http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/rogue-siskiyou/recreation/camping/campgrounds/siskiyouarea/quosatana.shtml
