I thought that the early SRs had a 4.62 diff ratio and that they raised it to 4.27 in '97. Seems for most folks building a rig, those lower ratios (earlier ones) would be the ticket.
Monteros are generally regarded as having some of the strongest and most durable running gear out there. They very, very rarely break, even when made into crawlers with stupidly big lifts and tires.

I checked the deflection of the OEM load bars with that big spare, two full cans of gas AND the high-lift jack...nothing. Then I climbed up there myself. There was some deflection of the roof...just a bit, but the load bars themselves didn't flex. After 3,000 miles of the above heavy loading...
