3rd Gen Montero Initial Impressions/Build Thread

Sorry about the tardy reply; I left with the family on a backcountry camping trip to Montana and Wyoming on the day you posted this. We just got back. I'm very happy with the mounting I fabbed up...have to get some close-ups posted in a few days when I come up for air. The rack itself was a...

3rd Gen Montero Initial Impressions/Build Thread

On my Gen III the stock load bars were used to mount the roof rack; I didn't want the higher profile/COG of the Yakima cross bars that I use for other purposes. I used stock gutter mounts turned upside down and modified with a little work to clamp onto the Montero's roof bars. Since the OEM...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

The stock tires were Yokohama Geolanders. I know that people like them, and I know that Mitsubishi specified this as the OEM tire, but for the life of me I can't understand why such a wimpy tire was fitted to such a heavy truck. When I first bought the Montero and drove it home from Las Vegas to...

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It was our bible. Combined with the Benchmark Atlas, which is by far the best series of maps I've seen, it was a simple matter to read up on what others had reported on various online sites, watch some Youtube vids, and decide what things we wanted...

Have you seen these Icelandic Arctic Trucks? BEASTLY!

Click that highlighted link and then click the little thumbnail of the truck in 3/4 front view. For the life of me I can't sort out how to display it, but it looks really nice.

Check out what the Icelanders are doing with a Monty and some big rubber.... http://www.arctictrucks.is/Pages/1644

3rd Gen rear storage platform design. Input wanted.

I'd be very hesitant to build anything that would impede your access to "the basement." That's a large and useful storage area down there, and is a great place for heavy items not used every day, such as recovery gear, tools, perhaps a second battery, etc. While I fully understand the intent...

    ImNoSaint's Gen III Build

Count me among those who swear at the non-folding rear seat! I've taken mine all apart and have not found it really amenable to being adjusted, so I just cleaned and lubed it. After much trial and error (and swearing), I finally arrived at the following, which almost always works: 1) lift up...

A stock Gen III explores Utah

Yeah, the rear bumper is the only thing that's going to be at all tricky with this otherwise simple project. There's a whole bunch of pics of various custom rear bumper builds that some fellow has posted on Flickr...going to have to dig that up....

    ImNoSaint's Gen III Build

I'm excited to see this; we're running a near parallel course with our Gen III. Good luck; can't wait to see how this progresses.

Great pics of the sliders. Those are exactly the ones that I was hoping to get. It's nice to hear an endorsement from an end user rather than the hyperbole of the advertisement. Thank you! Any other armor under there?

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

Thanks very much. May I say that I've enjoyed your Cornering Consciousness blog since I first ran across it. It was nice to go back and have another look now that we've been down to the red rock country. We debated whether this trip would be on the bike or in the Montero. As much as we like to...

    NATO Style Steel Wheels

I'll admit I'm new to all this, but I wonder why it wouldn't be a simple matter of using a wheel spacer that also acts as a bolt pattern adaptor. I've seen these conversion spacers used in a variety of different applications...why not the OEM Montero to, say, a generic Toyota for which there are...

    Some White Rim Trail pics

Outstanding pics! It's great to see a few views that complement the ones that we had...you got some really effective depictions of those overhands. Am I the only one to drive them and think about all those enormous blocks and slabs lying down at the bottom? Amazing stuff!

Ahh, yes, mileage. Well, we just happened to have kept accurate track of this. Bear in mind that this is a stock Montero, but with slightly oversized tires (265/75 R16) at 52 psi, a roof rack with a fair amount of stuff up there, and quite heavily loaded. Like, FULL of stuff. Freeway at 65 - 70...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words. A fellow we met in Arches was in a Jeep from Colorado, and he told us of his first visit to Eye of the Whale before he'd done anything to his (then new) Jeep. He said that he had been moving rocks just like we were! Damn straight...we weren't going to rip...

A stock Gen III explores Utah

I've posted a thread of our adventure exploring the Moab area in this thread in the Completed Adventures section. It was an amazing adventure, an excellent learning experience, an unforgettable trip with my dear wife, and it has an amazing ending. :wings:

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

We descended the other side of the bluff, heading down toward Little Valley. A lot of the trail after the initial steep climb and descent is that soft sand. Some of these areas are off-camber and really added a bit of pucker factor as we explored the tilt limits of the Montero. Oh, and...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

After gawking at the sights from the pavement, it was time again to head off into the dust and rock. We headed northwest on Salt Flats Road, almost closing the circle on the spot that had been our first stop in the area. We met some nice guys from Florida who were in two heavily-modified Jeeps...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

We next visited Looking Glass Rock, another one of those fascinating lumps of rock that populates the area, rearing up to serve as a landmark for people through the ages, including the earliest settlers and ranchers in the area. Many of them have carved their names on it, in addition to the...
