A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

We stopped at Newspaper Rock, an amazing paleolithic site that, in one small area, contains approximately 2,000 years of petroglyphs left by a variety of ancient people as well as more modern Native Americans. Many of you are undoubtedly familiar with Elephant Hill, which is described in the...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

It was finally time to climb up away from the Green River and leave the White Rim Trail. The climb out was not technical in any way, but was certainly spectacular in its own right. You can see the trail as it ramps up the right side of this canyon, but much harder to see are the series of...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

Did I mention how hot it was? We expected heat, of course. After all, it's UTAH, the DESERT, and it's JUNE! What we didn't expect was to have the whole place to ourselves. We assumed that, since school had recently gotten out, the summer vacation season would mean that we'd be competing for...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

Thanks for the kind words; this was an incredible trip for us! After a night on the Murphy Hogback, we started a descent toward the Green River for the second half of the trail. Aside from the amazing scenery, the most wonderful part was my wife's reaction to all this. She had never done...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

From the Shafer Trail we entered the White Rim Trail, a 70-mile zig-zag that often clings to the edge of sandstone cliffs, taking the lucky adventurer deep into Canyonlands National Park. After hours of jaw-dropping scenery, we prepared to end the first day on the White Rim by climbing...

A backcountry trip to Utah sells the wife on overlanding!

My wife and I just returned to our home in northwest Washington State from 10 days of backcountry camping, the first time that we've tested ourselves on an extended camping trip. The theme for our trip was exploration; we found most of our campsites simply by poking our noses into the hills. The...

    Montero exterior plastic trim removal

Hope you'll post a thread about this process, as it's something that I'm interested in doing, too. As for the plastic, it's just a matter of getting an edge lifted up and then peeling it away. The perimeter of each piece is attached to the car by 3M trim adhesive tape; it's tough, but not hard...

    No refrigeration needed

In the United States we've come to believe that just about everything needs to be refrigerated. Those of you from Europe or Asia certainly know better, as do blue water sailors. Does butter need to be refrigerated? Of course not. Cheese? No, absolutely not. If you're going to be gone for a...

    Gen 3 roof racks

I use the clamp-on Yakima load bars for hauling all sorts of stuff, and have always been very pleased with it. However, I'm getting ready to mount a rack (big aluminum basket-type) for a trip to Utah and just don't want the load to be so high up. I've been putting the parts together to mount the...

Pinzgauer 6x6 Backcountry Camper - Ebay find

I agree that a dirty vehicle doesn't mean anything, but there's far more to it than that. Look at those pictures. The guy can't even be troubled to cut the long tails off his wire ties. There's bodged stick-on weatherstripping everywhere, crudely made plywood doors, messy, homespun wiring, etc...

    sooo...

I'd hit it. What could go wrong? :sombrero: Seriously, troubleshooting the FWD system isn't rocket science. You might drive the thing and ascertain whether or not the front wheels are actually engaged or not.

A different sort of tire question: going narrower

It's hard to believe that Mitsubishi spec'd a passenger car tire on these trucks. The Yoko Geolanders that are on there aren't bad tires as passenger car tires go, but the poor truck wallows like it's on marshmallows when I lean my shoulder against it and give the fender a shove. No, not body...

A different sort of tire question: going narrower

I have a Gen III (16x7 wheels) with stock 265/70's on it. Rather than go with a wider tire, I'm interested in the more traditional narrower, taller tire. Think Land Rover. I know that a 75 profile will fit without lifting (springs ain't in the budget, boys), but what sort of width might I look...

CL: 85 Toyota diesel 4x4 pickup w/ flatbed pop-top camper

Of course if it's a Canadian reg it will have to be inspected at a US port of entry, and will be subject to US EPA and DOT requirements. It's not over 21 years of age (for any vehicle), and was clearly not built before 1977 (for light diesel trucks), so it must be proven that the truck is a "US...

Squealing serpentine belt on 01 Montero

Use some Sherlock Holmes' logic. You're burning through belts at a crazy rate. If it's not the tensioner or idler pulley (notorious failure points), look to the other things that the belt spins. Is your water pump going TU?

    New To Motorcycles.

I'd echo what was said above about new bikes. I've been riding all my life, commuting year-round, and currently own my third KLR. It's a great all-rounder and yes, it's perhaps large for what you want but I would not discourage you from riding one as your first bike. I would discourage any new...

    Gen 2.5 Antenna Removal???

Mine was broken for a while and I finally fixed it a couple of weeks ago. Ordered one on ebay and was absolutely delighted at the fast shipping and excellent, clear instructions. Search as suggested previously and you'll find them...they were in the upper midwest I believe. IF the old antenna...

Montero '01 Timing Belt: DIY Job?

Yeah, it always takes me forever when I do something for the first time. I suspected it was just a matter of being anal-retentive about those timing marks. What about the tools? Anything uber-special about the Mitsubishi "special tools" that a handy guy couldn't improvise? Thanks!
