    Backpacking stoves?

Overall fuel costs are a minor part of a backpacker's budget, especially if you are only going out a few times a year, and just on overnighters. If doing long trips (like the PCT), fuel weight (including container) is a bigger issue, along with resupply options. My fuel of choice is alcohol...

    Primitive firemaking suggestions?

The magnesium block and firesteel are similar in a key point - both use a ferrocerium rod to generate the sparks. The firesteel is a substantial rod with a handle. The magnesium block has a smaller rod embedded on an edge. Traditional flint is just a hard rock that scrapes carbon off old...

    Netbook DC Charger

12 to 19v adapter would also include an inverter, wouldn't it? This Wagan inverter claims 90-95% efficiency http://www.invertersrus.com/wagan2382.html

    Netbook DC Charger

How much power is wasted? How does this compare to the load rating of the car battery, alternator and/or 12v socket? My Aspire power supply is rated at 19v, 30w. I already have a 150w inverter.

Our new GSI Outdoor / Pelican base camp kitchen!

I use the 9" GSI wok with my Trangia alcohol stove set. It happens to fit in windscreen/pot holder nicely (many pans don't). I don't use if for true high temperature wok cooking, but it is great for things like scrambled eggs and grits. GSI has recently come out with several new coffee...

Tire question: What is the 17" equivelant of 235/85/16?

In this size range, a 5% change in profile (80 to 85) represents about an inch change in diameter. Most online tire retailers let you enter a tire size, and they will show all the models that come in that size. I usually use Tirerack for that, though they don't carry the smaller off-road...

    I don't see that.

    Moab and more closing?

The bill that is the subject of this thread has been introduced repeatedly since 1989, so is nothing new - though there is increased chance that it will pass this time. The lawsuits have to do with BLM's land use plans, which is a different matter. I found two statements describing the suits...

    British Columbia Circle Route

The Wiki article on these fast ferries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Ferry_Scandal seems to point the finger at the desire of the NDP to promote BC shipbuilding. By way of comparison, just this last year BC Ferries took delivery on 3 new large boats - built in Germany - for about $300...

    British Columbia Circle Route

I believe the target speed for ferries is around 20 knots. BC did try some faster catamaran ferries, but they were a fiasco. Even Washington dropped its fast passenger boats because of wake problems in narrow channels.

    Tarp/Shade questions...

I have experimented with a number of tarps on my Element. The Noah 12 is my favorite for use (stand alone) over the picnic table. I use 2 8' poles that came with another tarp, though Kelty also sells a great adjustable pole in this size. The quality of this rig depends on the purchase you get...

    Trapped in the back.

This has been a frequent question on Honda Element forums. The E has enough space for sleeping (6' on the floor with the seats up, 8' with all seats laid flat), and a clam shell tailgate. It is possible to exit through the side doors, but some find it awkward The simplest approach is to lay a...

Any Experience with Montague folding bikes?

I have the first model, which I bought around 1990. Compared to the mtn bikes of the time it was a bit heavier, due to the extra tubing, mainly in the central vertical post. Also the clearance for wide tires a bit tight. Otherwise it worked as advertised. Of course the whole bike technology...

    Queen Charlotte Islands April 2009

A note on geography. Most of the Queen Charlottes is mountainous, but the NE corner of the north island (Graham?) is flat, boggy, with an extensive sand spit. From satellite photos you can see multiple lines of sand dunes. Most this flat area is a large provincial park. At the south end of...

    Queen Charlotte Islands April 2009

Speaking of large trees, here's one of the off-highway logging trucks used on the islands - fortunately it is parked. And the start of a trail into old growth forest on the way to Rennell Sound (Yakoon Lake)

    Queen Charlotte Islands April 2009

We visited these Island in May several years ago - come to think of it, it was in 2003. Maybe it's time I plan another trip up that way. The only snow we saw was decorating the mountain tops, especially on the ferry north from Port Hardy, and along the drive inland from Prince Rupert. But rain...

    British Columbia Circle Route

One Vancouver Island ferry run, the one from Tsawwassen to Duke Pt, crosses the outflow of the Fraser River, in a WNW direction. One trip it was quite obvious when we left that flow. The transition from silty river water to the clearer waters of Strait of Georgia was quite sharp. By then we...

    Moab and more closing?

My guess is that BLM currently recognizes it as a road, it will remain accessible. If the county is trying to claim it is a road under that Civilwar era law, it might not. My guess is that separately named units in the bill are continuous, separated by roads of some sort. Deadend roads may be...

    Moab and more closing?

From the bill's text, here is the list of proposed wilderness areas in the Moab - LaSal area. Is anyone familiar with these? Are they existing wilderness study areas, or popular 4x4 driving areas? In the Canyonlands area: I'm guessing #3, Dead Horse Cliffs is area adjacent to the Utah park of...
