    Moab and more closing?

The Utah rep for the 2nd district, which covers most of the land in this bill, is a Democrat. His district also includes a portion of SLC. The current mix of SLC and rural SE Utah is a result of gerymandering by the Utah legislature some years ago. I don't see any position statements by Rep...

    Moab and more closing?

It is unusual for a wilderness act to pass without sponsorship by a home senator or reps. However this act was originally proposed in 1989 by a UT senator, Wayne Owens (D. Utah). http://www.suwa.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=7531&news_iv_ctrl=1162

    The pillow thread

I use two small ones. A thin 'kids' thermafoam for when I'm on my belly or back, a much thicker block of foam for when I'm on my side. The block is from a 'foam shop', and is just big enough to fit my head. For home use, and car camping I use ordinary pillowcases.

    Coffee pot

Another useful Melitta item is their 'Tea Filters' - user fillable teabags that are long enough to hang over the edge of the pot or cup. They work fine with two scoops of coffee and an insulated coffee mug. Asian stores sells 'tea bags', which are fold top (like plastic sandwich bags). They...

two person cot? does it exist?

Isn't there an fundamental problem with a double cot - everything sags toward the middle? If a cot is defined as fabric stretch on a frame, then sagging is inevitable - though less with a stronger, and heavier frame. A double cot with a frame member across the middle solves that problem, but...

    navigon gps?

If you travel the burbs where a new subdivision is added every year (or at least was until this year), then the map updates may be significant. But there are areas where the roads don't change that rapidly. Up to date POI may be of value, but frankly often there is a lot of garbage in those...

    FlipPac vs Wildernest

Note the stiffener glassed into the side. The spring attaches to that, as does the tent structure. There is a similar stiffener at the front corners. Cutting into the front to fit your truck could mess up this critical structural component. I don't recall just how close it is to the front...

    Bushcraft knife knives

check the 'fittings' section of Ragweedforge blades and kits page: http://www.ragweedforge.com/BladeCatalog.html#fittings I have made one knife, starting with a 7" Leuku (Lap campknife) blade from Ragweed. The handle was part of a replacement hammer handle. I ended up sawing it in half, and...

    Bushcraft knife knives

From Swedishknives this one is often nicknamed the 'swedish army knife'. Note the prominent finger guard. I keep a blue handle equivalent in a pack pocket for emergencies while the Mora 2000 is my favorite for blackberry whacking. The finger guard isn't as prominent, but the handle is a...

MS Streets & Trips on Acer Netbook?

I succeeded in loading a 2002 version of S&T on my One. I tried several things, but I don't recall at the moment which worked: - set the optical drive on the other computer (in my case an old laptop) to share, and read the CDs from that - copied the cd images to a stick (.iso), and used...

    Outdoor....BBQ....!

More on Korean BBQ http://www.chow.com/stories/11753 You can even get it from a truck in the LA area. And an extended debate on what makes something 'BBQ' (or pulled pork) http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/625448If I Put BBQ Sauce On A Carrot Is It Now A BBQ Carrot?

    Outdoor....BBQ....!

I've done some slow smoke BBQ, but since it takes time and equipment I only done it at home. In camp I don't do much with an open fire, because I don't like the smoke, ash, and potential embers. I've made some use of charcoal, either with a dutch oven, or a folding Pyromid grill. Of late I've...

    Outdoor....BBQ....!

Are you talking about slow cook BBQ (e.g. overnight with a brisket), or something quicker with a slathering of sauce? Most slow smokers would be too bulky to pack on an overland trip.

    Best map software for Canada?

BC online maps I've been aware of this source of rec site info for a while, but the current functionality is much better. It looks like it works from a general purpose BC map database. For example the same underlying base is used to show the status of current forest fires. Mapbooks still...

    The snack cracker debate.........

These may be fine for snacking, but if you need a bread substitute that packs well and keeps forever, you need pilot bread. Living the PNW I get the Alaska bush essential, Sailor Boy brand in the big 2lb blue box. http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackgrouse/230649331/

Snow Peak Dutch Oven -- Opinions?

It's been a few months since I looked at the Snow Peak pots (online). My impression was that they are selling a classic Japanese cast iron pot design. It isn't a modern copy of the American Dutch Oven. It may be a copy, but one that goes back a century or more. Before modern rice cookers...

    Backpacking stoves?

Either that or a compact pressure cooker :) However, the 1.5L Hawkins PC that fits in my Trangia stove isn't deep enough to hold a can of condensed milk covered with water.
