I just bought a 3rd gen. I believe it has the same, if not extremely similar, suspension as the 2nd gen. I haven’t had it in the dirt yet, and honestly don’t plan much anyway, but it rides WAY smoother than my 1st gen in the road. I don’t know if you can attribute that too torsion bar with coil...
Well don’t hold your breath. It’s gonna stay fairly stock. Not worthy of a build thread on here.
Yep. Still has the 5.4. I imposed a “less than $20k” budget and ideally under 100k miles upon myself. That put the Ecoboost out of my search criteria.
Replace the 2000 Expedition- in the garage at least. The Explorer, after doing a few improvements and maintenance items, is going to be my vehicle of choice for offroad car camping.
The new Expedition is a 2014 XLT with almost every option. I think the nav radio is the only thing I don’t have...
Maybe a little farther than 4 hours, but SFF Customs east of Colorado Springs does axles swaps all the time.

^^on a groomed trail. I’ve seen the marketing videos. Very impressive, but the light to moderate trails I’ve been on look nothing like those trails. Those BIG wheels and low profile tires won’t hold up well in rocks.
I have a friend with one. Don’t think it has the offroad package. Nice car, but any kind of offroad driving that involves rocks, tree roots and uneven roads does not seem like a good idea. And I’m not talking “rock crawling”. This is what you’d find on a trail in Colorado ranked 2-3 (out of 10).
New Year, new group of rigs getting their “adult” status.
The older mine get, the more I realize how important OEM parts are.
Here’s a picture of both my adult rigs: 2000 Expedition and 1997 Explorer.
Awesome! I have a 1st gen Expedition that I’ve taken on many trips. Great platform. I swear I see more 10th gen F150s and 1st gen Expeditions still on the road than any other “old” vehicle.
It is a very solid motor. Used on a ton of applications: Super Duty trucks, vans/buses/shuttles.
A transmission going out on a Suburban?!?? You don’t say.......
Looks like a great platform. I’ve always wanted an Excursion. I have it’s baby brother: the Expedition. I have basically the same...
This Ford guy finds it hilarious that you’ve budgeted for a replacement transmission up front.
I’d also go with the 2500. Or an Expedition or an Excursion.....
