    BatteryMinder - Solar

I have been thinking about adding solar to my truck, primarily to keep batteries topped off when parked. My primary battery is an Odyssey Grp 31 Extreme and it won't hold a charge when the truck is parked for a couple of weeks (new-ish battery, big alternator, fat cables, 2W solargizer...

Best value in 12V fridges, Indel B vs Dometic

I have one Indel 50-ish and two Whynter 45s. I think the Whynter is the same as the Edgestar. The Whynters are not built as well as the Indel, but they are steel exterior vs plastic. The Whynters are heavier and much louder when running, but they work just fine. The Indel has been great for...

    Fire extinguishers

Just yesterday I spoke with a guy driving a Cintas Fire Protection truck. He was loading some stuff at Home Depot and I noticed an extinguisher on the headache rack behind the driver's seat, so I asked him what Cintas installs in their own trucks. Simple: two pound ABC. Why? They think...

Lowes clearancing GoalZero Solar MicroUSB / Phone chargers, $33 down from $129

If you can find a store that still has them, they won't ship to you but will allow you to buy online for store pickup. I just bought two at the Lake Elsinore store, supposed to be ready for pickup later today. Even better, put it on your Lowe's card and get a 5% or 10% discount, depending on...

    Which off-road vehicle?

The 3G came out in 2005. That is what I own and is probably best of breed in modern PWs. In 2006 they went to the canbus electronics, some advantages for a street machine, but the usual computer downsides for everything else. I think the 3G went to about 2010 or so, with minor upgrades in...

    National Luna Battery Monitor issue

Mine beeps when the battery is low, engine running at idle and I engage the transmission. I suspect it's the slight voltage decrease as rpm's drop momentarily. Not an issue when battery is fully charged or when just cruising along.

    Which off-road vehicle?

Those two boys are going to grow faster than you think. I suggest a third generation Power Wagon Quad Cab (yes, I own one), because it will do do everything you list in your post. Everything, including trails. The 4G PWs got bigger, so a little less trail worthy.

    Going out Solo, Recovery options.

    1. Big 2. Heavy 3. Expensive 4. Most people just don't know what they need until they need it. Re the question about alternatives, there are lots of Google hits about home-brew anchors and PP clones, but most of them don't seem to work very well. There are milsurp stake anchors (mostly...

    Battery Jumper cable recommendations?

The lithium jump packs are small enough that you can shove them into your pocket to warm them up. I just used one this morning to start a completely dead GM 5.7. Took maybe three minutes to transfer enough charge to the starting battery to start the truck, so don't get discouraged if it...

    Going out Solo, Recovery options.

I am in the southwest, mostly Imperial Valley and southern Arizona, plus San Bernardino Mountains and up north to the Oregon border (sometimes). I carry MaxTrax and have had to use them, they work and are worth it if you need them. After a couple of desert experiences that required summoning...

    Ford or Ram?

Here's your diesel PW prototype: http://www.trucktrend.com/features/travel/163-0808-hard-core-heaven-moab/ Note winch placement out front, to clear the intercooler.

    Ford or Ram?

News Flash? That's why the KORE Cummins PW was a prototype that disappeared after it was shown at Moab.

    Ford or Ram?

That's the point I was making. G80 is a GM option code that designates either a clutch pack limited slip or an "automatic" locker, depending on which vehicle it is on. My GM SUVs have clutch pack limited slip diffs and my GM truck has the locker. Easy to tell the difference between the two...

    What to do?

FWIW, I have had Cherokees, Grand Cherokees, and a handful of small and larger Japanese trucks. Getting into a full size truck was an absolute revelation and I won't go back to a smaller offroad vehicle until I'm just too old for the big truck.

    Ford or Ram?

Don't know about the current Cummins in the current Rams, but the old 5.9 in the 3G PWs fit OK, except that they had to hang the winch out front on a winch bumper to make room for the intercooler. That big winch hanging forward on a heavy bumper, plus the weight of the Cummins plus the weight...

    Ford or Ram?

If your Dodge has a G80, then it's a General Motors axle, and that would explain why the axle is a POS. At least in my Dodge, the rear diff has a clutch-pack limited slip, and it works just fine.

    What to do?

Keep the truck (assuming it is 4WD) and add a few mods to enhance capability, but don't go overboard. I have a Power Wagon and my hunting buddy has a new JKU. When we go on longer trips, he always wants to take the PW because it is just so much more comfortable than the Jeep. The PW will go...

Help me spend my modey- Dodge 2500 choices

And don't forget the folded frames on the early Rapturds.

    Ford or Ram?

That weight also makes the diesels less capable in soft sand, mud, snow. Supposedly one of the reasons Dodge never built a diesel PW, other than the KORE prototype at Moab. Dodge planned to sell a bunch of PWs to BLM, USFS, BP, rural PDs, etc. I do see a few PWs in police and game warden trim...

    Charging batteries, the small kind...

I suspect you are correct, but alkaline AAs have gotten to be so cheap that I'm not sure I want to try rechargeables again. I'm also not using nearly as many batteries as I used to.
