Chassis Paint or not to Paint

I'm painting ours, as I have it completely stripped. Does it need it? Probably not. Is it a pain in the ******** to do? You bet! Will it look better when done? Yes! When finished, our truck has to go over the pits, so I figure that if it's been stripped, serviced, checked, cleaned and then painted...

    1120 AF Build in Norway

Hello and welcome! So, the easy bit is done! You have a truck... and a great one at that! Well done! Now, it's only a mistake if you don't follow it through! If you are starting out having never done anything like this before, then you must ask lots of questions. The questions you don't ask are...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

More fantastic pics! That last pic of your truck really shows how far it has come. It's a great looking rig! So, with that in mind it's question time from me as I'm still mid build and can make changes... ;) Now you guys have covered some decent km's in the truck, and have spent many a night...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

So, I'd like to say I've had an exciting weekend working on the truck, but I have to say I'd be lying! I've had the most boring soul destroying two days cleaning and sanding the chassis ready for some paint. Before I parked the truck in the workshop, I steam cleaned it at work, and thought I had...

Mercedes AL3 and HL7 available axle ratios..

Thanks Nick. Thant's good info! Funnily enough I looked at one on a pallet the other day... The price tag of $8000 the fella threw at me put me off a bit, but at least I now have some options... I've also since found out that the 4x4 Atego 1629 runs an AL3 front axle with a 3.909 ratio... If I...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

So, as Jon is always posting pics of where they have been in their truck, I thought I'd share a few. Although not in our truck, we have just had a long weekend in The Flinders Ranges. The recent rains have made a place that's dry and brown very green for the first time in years. We love it up...

Mercedes AL3 and HL7 available axle ratios..

Hi all. Anyone have any Mercedes contacts? I'm chasing info on what axle ratio's are available for the axles under our Mercedes 1222a. I have an AL3 front axle (current ratio 1= 4,300 as stamped on plate)), and a HL7 rear hub reduction axle (current ratio 000=4,333). The gearbox is a 6 speed...

    Unstable Unimog

Hi Pat, and welcome. Usually if things get entertaining on overrun, it's to do with bushes... When under drive load, everything is pushed tight and the wear is not allowed to move, but the moment you back off the accelerator, the axles are then just floating under the vehicle, allowing them to...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Not yet... They really are rare as I've only seen the LH snorkels. Can always be added later if I find one... :)

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Another busy day today. With the truck out of the workshop, I started the not so exciting job of cleaning the chassis and seeing what needs attention before servicing and painting it... I've found a few things... Front prop uni joint cups are missing their dust seals.. The bits that are there...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Sure did! The Hab Box is now blocked securely, and the sliders removed and stowed until the last refit hopefully in 4 to 6 months time. Happy days.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Here's half way through the 'slide'! And the completed job, without incident! Now to service, clean and paint the chassis... whilst sheeting and flooring the body... and other things.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

With everything stripped off the chassis, it is time to get the hab box back off the chassis. This was made harder with the 5 point system now hanging below the base of the hab box... I had to jack the hab box up so it would all clear. I also have two sliders tacked to the ledge in the workshop...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Ian. I looked at those, and nearly went with them, but was assured that I only need orange side markers here in SA. Worst case I can pull the ones I have ordered out and the ones you have will sit over and cover the hole left quite well. :)

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

No luck on the video, so it's on with the strip down! Today was a busy day. The morning was spent helping a mate but the afternoon was spent in the workshop pulling everything off ready for the body lift tomorrow. If there's anything I've forgotten now, it'll have to happen later!! :) The air...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

So, before pulling everything off, there were a few things I had to do, finish and plan... First up was the side marker lights. I have managed to get pretty well all of them equidistant on both sides except either side of the rear wheels, without having to modify anything, or have a light in an...
