    Oregon loop - May

Any opinions about cell phone coverage in the rural parts of Oregon? Some of the biggest gaps on coverage maps seem to be in eastern Oregon. Is any company significantly better or worse? I'm mostly concerned with emergency use, so roaming charges aren't a concern. I have Verizon now, but am...

    Alaska/BC 2007

One recent camping trips 2-3 weeks long, we end up spending a night in a motel about 10 days into the trip, gettting a shower and doing laundry. On a 3mth Alaska trip some years ago, we ended up camping (in a Wildernest) about 2/3 of the time. We stayed in motels in Edmonton, Fairbanks...

    Tires: Wide or Narrow?

Tread width varies with tire model, section (maximum) width, profile and rim diameter. Generally an AT or MT tire with a square shoulder will have a wider tread than a highway-allseason. There is also some variation across brands. For example I have found Coopers to be relatively wide in the...

    Oregon loop - May

Dry Creek? Is that on the west side of the Lake Owyhee? I haven't come across any descriptions of access on that size. paulj

    Tires: Wide or Narrow?

The spec tables for the tire you have in mind should give the allowable rim width. This usually is a 2" range. I would guess for 235's the range is 6-8". 6 1/2 and 7 seem to be the recommended rim widths for 235's (at least in 70 profile size). It has been argued here that it is ok to mount...

    USB Charging Ports

I just saw at Sams Club a portable battery pack, about the size of paperback book, with outlets for USB 5v and 120AC. It is rechargeable with AC supply. Pocket Power Portable Power http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=354688&pCatg=5734

    Oregon loop - May

I am planning a two week camping trip in Oregon in May, and would welcome comments on routes, things to see, and things to avoid. The general plan is to quickly cross to SE Washington, then down the east side of Oregon, across the south, and then up the middle of the Cascades to Mt Hood, and...

    Canyonland's White Rim - gas? (Apr '07)

When carrying extra gas, when do you transfer it to the main tank? My default thinking has been to keep the gas in reserve, using it only if the main tank ran dry, or at least low. At that point I would be focused on getting to the nearest gas station, and it would give me some peace of mind...

    Arctic Ocean Expedition: March-April, 2007

Here's a description of the Lake Isabel trail near Gold Bar, WA. I have driven Reiter Road to this area, but haven't tried anything off it. It is a popular, though informal, area for ATV play. http://www.off-road.com/4x4web/travels/trails/usa/washington/isabel7_3_99.html...

    Canyonland's White Rim - gas? (Apr '07)

Any recommendations on cans for carrying gas on trip like this? A classic 5 gallon metal can seems like overkill for occasional use like this, plus it is an awkward size to carry upright on a conventional roof rack. I was thinking of a couple of 2 gallon Blitz cans. I think they would fit in...

The latest blog was about driving the bobsled chute called the Cassiar. Here's a page that describes what it takes to keep it open in the winter: http://www.hollowaybar.com/projects/project4.html

    Arctic Ocean Expedition: March-April, 2007

Last time that I went looking for a self-serve car wash in BC I thought the place was closed - until I realized that I had to push a button to open the doors. Once inside the doors closed, leaving me in a nice cosy room. Will the wonders of living in snow country never cease :26_7_2: paulj

    Arctic Ocean Expedition: March-April, 2007

Weatherwise this could be an interesting weekend in the Seattle area. Today it was balmy, short sleave weather (around 60), but by Sunday (1st) they are predicting snow down to the 1500 ft level. There was talk earlier about some sort of meeting with the ARB people in Renton, and some sort of...

AA lithium batteries should give you good battery life. I use them in my 43 while traveling, reserving rechargeable metal hydrides for use around home. paulj

    USB Charging Ports

The USB voltage is 5v. So you need a 12v to 5v converter. You might ask at a computer shop that specializes in upgrades and parts. I don't know if there are laptop power supplies that work from 12v, or if most start with 18. Those shops (or Radio Shack) would also have USB sockets, such as...

    Arctic Ocean Expedition: March-April, 2007

You lucky guys, driving in the white season! I did the Dempster in the 'black' season - as can be seen from the back of my white S10 (and Wildernest) at a buggy campground just beyond the Arctic Circle (mid August). Also, the Circle crossing looks at lot more 'civilized' that it was in 1988...
