    Three weeks in Oregon

As mentioned in my Oregon Loop planned trip thread http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5022 we just completed a three week loop around the state. I have created a Google map with nearly 100 placemarks outlining the trip. The map would be clearer if I could use different markers...

    Oregon loop - May

When we were there in the middle of May, Hat Point road was snow free up to Mamaloose, and trucks with more clearance than mine were driving the last 2 miles to the overlook. Lots of spring bear hunters were out on ATVs. There were just a few patches of snow at the Saddle Ck campground just...

    Oregon loop - May

Just got back, after 3200 miles. I'll start a thread on the complete expeditions section. The route was much as planned except for a detour north to La Pine for groceries and a flat tire, and a modified loop to the south coast. Bagged 17 major waterfalls. paulj

    Waht did I see?

Do you have to wear a bib Saturday evenings when the Tacoma PBS station plays old episodes of 'Last of Summer Wine'? The picture I posted is a Corgi model of the LR on that series. paulj

Best bang for buck good photography digital...

I moved from manual SLR (Pentax before built in lightmeters) to P&S film to P&S digital and back to digital SLR (Pentax ist DS). A difference between P&S digital and DSLR that didn't really hit home till I bought mine is that the photo sensor is used differently. With most P&S the sensor works...

    North American Adventure

There is a string of 3 dams on the Skagit River along WA 20. The highway dosn't cross any of them, though it does cross the Skagit just down stream from the Diablo Dam. Seattle Light and Power runs tours of these dams http://www.seattle.gov/light/tours/skagit/ http://www.nps.gov/noca/ gives...

Article: Three-wash system will keep camp dishes clean

What's not entirely clear from that article is where the bacterial contamination is coming from in the first place. Different sources could require different solutions. - if it comes from the food, such as raw meat and unclean vegetables, it can contaminate the rest of the food even before it...

    Transitionial sleeping bag.

Lightweight backpacking 'guru' Ray Jardine is, perhaps, the best known promoter of a quilting, a sleeping bag without the zipper. Ray has done some major expeditions, though generally without wheels. http://www.ray-way.com/quilt/index.shtml

    Window Blackouts.

Last I bought some, it was $10 for 2' wide roll, 10' long. This is a useful size for use in the car. For house insulation it sells for around $20-25 for a 16" wide, 25' long roll (Home despot prices). paulj

    Transitionial sleeping bag.

First, what temperature range are you talking about? You might try a sleeping bag liner first. We've been using liners for years, in part to keep the sleeping bag cleaner, but also because it reduces drafts and gives flexibility in different temperatures. An alternative to the usual mummy...

    Honda Element

A few Element owners have tried to add spacers, generally at the top of the strut towers, to gain some ground clearance. One found he could add an inch or two in front, but the rear was too compact. Another one seems to gotten something that worked front and back, though I didn't pay attention...

    Window Blackouts.

Reflective bubble pack that hardware stores sell for insulation (Reflectix?) is easy to cut to fit in windows. Cut just a bit large, it fits in many windows without extra hardware. paulj

    Cell Phone Signal Boosters

Wilson offers two antennas with a magnetic base, one about 4" tall, the other 12" and $10 more. I assume the taller one is more effective, but I'm not sure it is worth the extra money and size. I would be using it on an Element with some roof rack gear - small box and low platform. Still...

    Honda Element

The AWD mechanism has an overheating cutoff. Since AWD is activated by oil pressure buildup (a pump driven by the drive shaft spins faster than one driven by the rear differential), the oil can heatup. The thermal cutoff is temporary. I've read of just a handful of cases where this has...

Oregon Back Country Discovery Route (Summer '07)

The route has been mentioned in a few recent threads. In one of those I posted a link to trip S to N done by a couple of guys on motorcycle. That link has the most details that I've found. I am planning a trip in that part of Oregon in May, but will probably stay to the east, and then...

    Honda Element

The best thing about the Element, in my opinion, is that the interior practically begs to be used as a camper. The poor ground clearance certainly is a strong limitation. A lot of people worry about the low, exposed gas tank, but in practice it isn't a real problem. I have not read of a...

    Oregon loop - May

Here's a web page with road conditions report for Silver City, Idaho http://www.historicsilvercityidaho.com/roadconditions.html Looks like they had some major storm damage a couple of winters ago, but most of that got repaired by last fall. Now it's a question of snow melt timing. I suspect by...

    Coffee Preparations

I used that REI travelers coffee grinder quite a bit, even in a press. However I like the newer GSI grinder, that looks like a clear lexan flying saucer even better, though it took a bit of experimentation to find the right way to hold it. One trick with using a French Press is in getting the...

    Oregon loop - May

The Sheriffs Association report into the Kim family search (last December) includes the cell phone coverage map that an Edge Wireless technician produced to help pinpoint where the family might be. The position of ridge slopes oriented toward the cell tower near I5 is quite evident...
