Nexus 7 or Samsung Tab 3???

Which Samsung Tab 3 version did you have? The 7" or the 8"? The 8" has a significantly faster processor, 50% more RAM, and a higher res screen than the 7" version, and therefore has a correspondingly better user experience than the 7" version of the Tab 3.

    2M Recommendations For Beginners Please!

Many ham radios (dual band or mono band) can be "MARS / CAP mod" modified fairly easily to transmit outside the ham bands. Not for general civilian use, but permitted for users who are officially affiliated with a government agency, like 'the kid'.

Nexus 7 or Samsung Tab 3???

Run a cigarette usb adapter capable of putting out 2.1A, like this flush mount one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0077PM3KG. Note that's 2.1A total, for both sockets, not each socket, so you may not be able to plug something into the other USB slot while charging your tablet & still have the...

Project “Polar Bear”: 1989 V2500 Suburban

When trying to stuff large tires under a vehicle without lifting it much or at all, an option can be to cut & trim some sheet metal around the fenders and then install larger fender flares e.g. from Bushwacker et al. But doing that depends on condition of existing sheet metal, desire to stay...

    Expedition vehicle build goals

I also agree that some combination of onboard & portable is the way to go for the reasons listed above. Also, for everyday use, one can leave the portable stuff in the garage for lighter running weight. And having some portable allows one to adjust exactly how much fuel & water to bring, without...

    ExploringNH's 2000 Ford Excursion build

I wish mine had a Dana 60, instead of the stock Dana 50. Admittedly mine has an ARB air locker in it (and 4.56 gears) which may increase the strength of the carrier etc., but so far I haven't managed to break mine with either Goodyear Wrangler H1 military surplus radials in 37x12.50x16.5 or Toyo...

    ExploringNH's 2000 Ford Excursion build

I have an '00 X too. My quick & dirty make shift sleeping platform inside was to also remove the 3rd row & put 6 Action Packer 24 gallon boxes for gear in the cargo area behind the 2nd row, and then drop a sheet of marine plywood on top, and 3" camping mattresses on top of that. Disadvantages...

Help picking a lift kit for a 6.0L Excursion

Hmmm, you're probably right, I think the info I quoted above was generic F250/F350/SuperDuty info. Since the F250/F350 only switched to coil springs in '05 ... and '05 was the last year for the Excursion, the Excursion may have just stayed with leaf springs until the end of production in '05.

Help picking a lift kit for a 6.0L Excursion

Depends on the model year. I found the following info on a diesel forum, which I can't vouch for the accuracy of, but sounds correct: "03/04 are leaf spring front ends, so they used a wider offset to push the tires away from the springs. 05+ are coil springs and can use less of an offset. So...

why not as many 96-99 suburbans?

I had a '99 2500 4WD with the big block Vortec 454 (7.4L) with 285/75/16 (~33") tires, and got around 9 mpg, but I have a heavy foot. It's possible with a higher lift and/or larger tires that you may see the same mileage or worse. I believe the front driveshaft on the 4WD models spins...

Help picking a lift kit for a 6.0L Excursion

Most lifts on Excursions (without cutout flares) seem to be roughly e.g. 33" tires = leveling kit - couple of inches lift needed 35" tires - 4-6" lift needed 37" tires = 6-8" lift needed I bought my 2000 7.3L PSD (forged rods) Excursion, with an 8" lift (all-spring, i.e. no blocks, lift, double...

    Clear something up for me...

Good points, though it's worth pointing out that while a cheap HT connected to a decent external mobile antenna may not receive that much worse than a mobile connected to the same antenna, the output power of an HT (usually max of 5W, sometimes less e.g. 2-3W when not connected to external power...

Technologically inept person needs laptop for travel. Please help!

You notice they still had their trusty Lowrance GPSs (large on co-driver's side, beneath iPad, small on driver's side - off) installed? I wonder which GPSs they really used for the race. The Lowrance GPSs are ruggedized & purpose-designed for topo mapping & trail running, and have e.g. 10Hz...

Technologically inept person needs laptop for travel. Please help!

If you go the laptop route, an SSD (no moving parts) instead of a mechanical hard drive will definitely be more rugged. High capacity SSDs can be pricey, but no more pricey than having that amount of memory built into a tablet.

Nexus 7 or Samsung Tab 3???

I have an 8" Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, and the GPS sensitivity on it seems really good. It often sees 2-5 more satellites than my Nexus 10, using the Android 'GPS Test' app (e.g nexus 10 - In view: 14, In use: 8; 8" Tab 3 - In View: 17, In use: 13), so it might be worth adding the 8" version of the...

    iPad Mini with Retina display

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8" is also worth a look. $280 for 16GB WiFi-only version with built-in GPS, but has a microSD card slot to which you can add a 64GB microSD card for ~ $50) for topo map tiles. GPS sensitivity on mine seems excellent, it normally receives 2-3 more satellites than my Nexus 10...

Google Nexus 5 phone now available

Bought a black 32GB GN5 yesterday. Waited until about lunchtime to purchase, so I could read some of the early impressions reviews, sp, as a result, mine should arrive in about a week's time. I also have a GN10, so I'll be looking forward to the KitKat upgrade for that. I also have a Galaxy...
