Closer and Closer to Biting the Bullet on a KLR650

Way to much plastic on the newer KLRs - assuming you are riding off road.

    Painting a Pelican Box????

It's not that expensive. Any decent sign shop would be able to do it for you. If you have a printed logo (multiple colors), be sure they put a clear laminate over it.

Closer and Closer to Biting the Bullet on a KLR650

Any particular reason you are limiting your search to the KLR? . . . not saying there is anything wrong with a KLR, but there are several other options out there for that size of a bike (DR, DL, GS, . . .).

New coffee mug, Cabelas 50th anniversary edition

The little blue mugs kind of suck. I have several . . . For an inexpensive yet high quality mug, look at the Kans double walled stainless mugs. Last I checked, they were $10/ea, and being double walled, they keep your coffee hot for quite a while. For a travel mug (lid), the double walled...

Looking for tough, what do you use?

Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, pretty much any swimming pool supply store . . . It works great for cleaning concrete floors before laying down epoxy . . . never tried it for cleaning aluminum though.

    Rubicon Express upate

It will be interesting to see how the play the product line up. Hopefully they won't just slap the RE name on the same old pro-comp (pro-crap?) parts, hoping no one will notice.

    The WHISKEY Offroad 2011

It was good to catch up with everyone. SOAZ kicked ***, doing the 50 in 4.5 on a single speed. As a bonus, there was a bit of good old fashioned drunken debauchery down on Whiskey Row last night.

    Overland Rally

Are you talking about the Overland Rallies (put on by Expeditions West), or the Overland Expo (put on by Conserventures)? Based on the dates and location, I'm assuming the Overland Rallies . . .

Dodge full size with dual batt?

I'm not sure what all the gassers have under the hood - but take a look at one of the Cummins powered trucks. They all come with two batteries. Maybe find one in a junk yard that you can hi-jack the battery tray + misc bits out of . . .

    Is a Rubicon worth it???

That thing must be plated in gold.

    Is a Rubicon worth it???

It all depends on where you want to go. The Rubicon package is a good deal, if you are likely to end up installing lockers anyway. If you seriously doubt you will ever need/want them - then save the $$$ and skip it. Personally, I put over 100,000 miles on mine. The combination of the low 4:1...

    Ordering my suspension... Finally

If you have to cut corners on a suspension - do it on the springs, not the shocks. If you have to wait a few months while you save up more $$$ to buy the good shocks, then do yourself a favor and wait a few months.

off the beaten path coffee solutions

The Overland Journal 2011 Gear Guide has a article that covers most of the common brewing methods (not all, but most). None of them are rocket science, and most of them require very little investment in gear. Also note that you probably don't want to use 'boiling' water to make your coffee...

    Dodge Ram 2500

They can make all the bumpers in the world -- but if they can't sell them, what's the point? Demand simply does not justify mass production.

    Dodge Ram 2500

After the maintenance items, I'd be looking at a couple gauges. Minimally, EGT and fuel pressure. EGT so you know you aren't heat soaking your turbo bearings when you shut it down, and fuel pressure so you can get it off the road if the lift pump fails (driving with no lift pump will kill the...

TJ Question - camping from the "experienced ones"

You might get away with just a hitch basket if it is just a weekend trip, and you are traveling into a known area (so you will know what to bring, and what to leave behind). You're going to have to pack light though . . .

Taking a dirt bike to Mexico...

Where are you guys crossing the border? I usually cross at Nogalas & drive down to pick up the ferry (import permit still required), or at Lukeville and head west on the south side of the fence. If I could get in/out without the hassle of permits, it would make the drive across I-8 worth it.

Taking a dirt bike to Mexico...

Really? They turned me around at immigration and made me go back and do the temp importation for the truck and both bikes (again, one permit covered all three). I was told (by immigration) that the import wasn't needed if the bikes are ridden it (and stay in the hassle free zone) - but any...

Taking a dirt bike to Mexico...

I'm not sure if the dual citizenship thing will change this, but . . . If you ride the bike into the hassle free zone (Sonora & baja) - no importation is required. But, if you are towing (including hitch carriers), you have to import each 'vehicle' (one permit listing each VIN). I've never...
