    Arctic Ocean Expedition: March-April, 2007

There is a blog entry about gloves and mitts. The kind that I use most, especially when temperatures are around freezing are fingerless gloves. The first pair I bought were brown knit ones, the kind you are likely to see on the hands on an old Scottish sheepherder in a period movie. Newer...

    Lion's Back Closed?

This picture that I took in the fall 2004 may give a better overview of the settiong for the Lions Back. If I recall correctly I'm on the switchback that leads up to the Sandflats trail area. I think you had to go through the property in the foreground to get to the base of fin. There may...

    Lion's Back Closed?

If I located the Lions Back correctly on one of the BLM maps (just north of a switchback in the road running east from town), just an odd corner of one of these parcels was stateland. The rest was part of the private land that surrounds the town. paulj

    Arctic Ocean Expedition: March-April, 2007

There's a difference between what is ideal for a cold, wet marine environment, and a colder, but relatively dry inland site. In the wet case the best seems to be moisture wicking synthetics (fleece etc) under waterproof rain gear. At best you control the moisture, whether from outside or...

    Wildernest Spare Parts Info

On my Wildernest, the door lock had an inside handle, secured to the square shaft with a set screw. I screwed an aluminum wear strip on the edge of the lower tailgate, and remounted this inside handle so engaged the wear strip when the lock was closed. Thus I locked the upper tailgate to the...

    Arctic Ocean Expedition: March-April, 2007

The newsgroup account that I referenced earlier talked about picking up a second hand snow mobile suit for the cold weather drive. As you pass through Alberta you may be able to find something like this on sale at season closeouts. I'd check the online adds for Canadian Tire. I don't own such...

The Wildernest people also sold a frost liner - basically cotton sheeting fitted to hang over the sleeping area of the tent. It was supposed to allow vapor to pass through, and to keep any frost that forms on the inside of the tent from falling on the occupants. paulj

You will be passing through enough towns that you can restock your food. In small town Canada, the fresh meat selection is skimpy and expensive, but decent deli meats are abundant, ranging from bulk franks to good quality German style smoked hams (Freybe brand). On several occasions on my...

    Arctic Ocean Expedition: Winter 2007

I read the (usenet) newsgroups through Google, but you can use other servers. No need to subscribe to read the threads. Here's a link to the lead post of this thread: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.outdoors.rv-travel/msg/fa3af83fcd663edc In this account, a couple drove a truck full of...

    Hello From B.C

Hasn't most of the Kettle Valley Railroad been turned into a bike trail? And didn't a big forest fire destroy a number of the trestles around Kelowna? I've camped by a couple parts of the trail - at Kettle Valley Rec area and Otter Lake PP. I have attached a view of the historic mining camp...

    Hello From B.C

I've been through SE BC a couple of times. I've driven some back roads, but nothing challenging. I've climbed up from the highway at Hedley, past the working mine, and on to Apex ski area. On another trip, I took the 'shortcut' past Phoenix mine, and looked a bit at the cemetery. The next...

What is it with the "throw away attitude"!?

What has probably happened with these hinges is that assembly convenience has taken priority over repairability. For example the hinges might be assembled in one factory, welded to the door somewhere else, and the assembly added to car on final line. In earlier designs the respective halves of...

What is it with the "throw away attitude"!?

I suspect the body shop price is for more work than just the welding. They probably would repaint the whole side, or at least enough to ensure the repair was not detectable. I am reminded of my first car, a Dodge Dart with a 100,000 miles. I don't recall the year, though 7 yrs old sounds...

    Dutch Oven cooking...

I also have an 8", which is about the right size for two people. A problem with many recipes is that they written for the larger ovens, 10, 12 or greater. So one way or another I have to innovate. Another problem I have with many recipes is that they are really just kitchen recipes cooked...

    Closed/Impassable Road Interactive Database?

Many forest service districts have 'current conditions' pages for roads and trails. Here, for example, is the page from the forest nearest Seattle: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/conditions/road_conditions_report.shtml Here most closures are due to snow, but this year we also had some bad flooding...
