Nice! Did you mold the fiberglass yourself? What is the function of the jog in the middle?
What is the stand-up height through the rear hatch?
I've wondered about excursions / suburbans when i was shopping for a 4x4 van. They're so much more available!
is a trackbar important on a leaf sprung truck? My '92 Advanced 4x4 E350 does not have a trackbar or any axle centering device other than the leaves. Did your earlier kits have trackbars?
hmmm, good to know!
So seriously, to break into a ford van all you have to do is give a good push on the rear key-hole? That's ridiculous! Has it been that way from '92 to current? lol. I'll have to go take a look at mine.
They never responded to email, but i called on tuesday. They do have the hardware, but they won't sell hardware alone. They will sell a complete sofa bed assembly... for $1,500. The guy i spoke to was courteous and helpful, and i'm sure if i was a millionaire they'd be a good company to work...
It's been done for sure. There are at least two guys over at the sportsmobileforum who have put VW tops on Fords. "Betty Ford" is one, and "Spurious" is the other. In fact, i'm pretty sure that coincidentally each of them has done it twice.
Here is a link to Spurious' build thread...
If 4WD isn't important to you, a vanagon could be quite affordable. They are well loved around here (and even more so on www.thesamba.com) and can be made into good little rigs. Just wanted to throw that out there so that you don't immediately put them out of consideration. The Syncro...
For what it's worth...
I just picked up a '92 with the 5.8 and it is having a sort of similar problem. I haven't had a chance to address it yet, but some things that i was told could be the cause are fuel filter, fuel pump, and throttle position sensor. I'll report back when it is sorted out.

check out that hinge system. That is perfect, and it is the same as what dhally posted (i think). I PM'd the owner of those pictures to ask where he sourced the hinges.
I spoke to a guy with an '88 pathfinder and it sounds like his has the same 2 problem links. He said it rides very nicely... that's pretty subjective, he was also trying to sell me the van. I just can't imagine that these would ride near as well as a design without the limitation of those 2...
GTRV stands for Garagable Top RV and they are a pop-up, similar to the penthouse, but even lower profile when in the down position. Google GTRV. I think they're in BC, Canada. Any new top is going to cost a minimum of a couple grand.
Stationary tops are cheaper (and have a lot of advantages in...
Yeah, it looks really cool to see wheels in the air, which is very common in the synchro videos.... but it's actually a bad thing. If another vehicle can go through the same spot and keep all 4 tires on the ground, then it's doing much better.
That said, i don't know how other vehicles would...
another option might be getting a cheap metal-framed futon on craigslist and cutting a section out of the middle to narrow it up a bit. Then get some big flats of foam for mattress.
Beautiful! That's exactly what i was talking about. There are drawings too, great!
I wouldn't mind finding somebody selling just a "hinge kit" for this, so i could build the rest of it myself. Might try building the whole thing though. This seems like an ideal design for me, because i can have...
I'm researching this same problem now too by the way. It seems like the sort of topic that a quick google search should pull up plenty of good, detailed how-to articles, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I've seen seats / couches where the bench stays stationary, and the back swings forward...
Pictures are small, but this is from a CL ad. This guy had internal roll cage in an '89 Ford van. The pictures are still hosted on CL but the ad is gone, so the pictures will be gone before long too, save em if you want em.
