The tanks do make quite a bit of difference if you have a slow compressor, because of course you can air up in stages. You can quickly air up all 4 tyres by half a bar each from the tanks, to get them acceptable for driving. Then drive for the 10 minutes or so while the compressor is refilling...
Hahaha! yes, maths & physics, if you don't use 'em you lose 'em! :)
I lived in Vancouver for a couple of years when I was a nipper. My father worked there for MacBlo. Mid/late sixties. Intrigued as to why you ask?
1 bar = 1 atmosphere = 14psi
Your tyres are about 75 litres each. So if you want to air up by 2 bar (from, say 0.5 bar to 2.5 bar), you'll need 150 litres of free air per tyre, PLUS the tank will still need to be at 2.5 bar or more when you're finished - the tank needs to be at greater pressure...
Just a thought, but how much do we care if the pin breaks? It's not going to fly out, is it? Sounds to me like a benign (and unlikely) breakage. The main issue would be that it would be a PITA to get the broken/bent pin out.
Besides, tell me again why we're not using a receiver shackle, if...
Not my cup of tea, but it does look like a terrific vehicle! I'm pretty sure it will only ever be a one-off, though. Too much work for not enough benefit, IMO.
I suspect there will be no tailgate.
Hiya John - yes, good memory!
Fair comment on both of those advantages over an electric. Myself, I'd still opt for an engine drive pump, especially on a bigger truck. When you're stuck, you need a certain amount of energy to get you out, whether that's spent generating a huge amount of power...
This seems to me to be the worst of all worlds. Almost all the weaknesses of an electric winch, with the cost and weight and complexity of a electrics and hydraulics, and the added inefficiency of converting electrical power into hydraulic power.
As a backup powerpack, maybe. Or if you were...
A small winch can do anything a big one can, if you carry quite a bit of extra rigging. It's slower, but requires less power, and is much more manageable if you want to have two mounting points. And on simple light-duty pulls, you won't even need the extra rigging. And it's cheaper.
Actually, except for "field expedients", Kinetic Rope recoveries were forbidden for non-armoured vehicles. For one thing, it was too hard to control when the ropes should be retired, and the accident rate was very high.
But no matter what the recovery technique, if Jate Rings were available...
Absolutely! I'd be much happier to take a vehicle full of electronics into the bush if I had the tools to diagnose any problems, and bypass those that are not physically disabling.
I'm a D1 fan myself, but my brother has a DII, and I must say, I am impressed with its capabilites (even without...
When I was in the army, using Jate Rings or equivalent, with a (long) harness was SOP for any vehicle recoveries. Always use a double recovery point if possible. The long harness prevents any significant force pulling the frame rails together. There really is no downside to the harness method...
As my earlier post said, the problem is that it might well not be strong enough. It's a long bar, designed to take towing loads, not a snatch pull right in the middle of it. If there's any chance of bending the pin, I'd say the bar is at much higher risk of bending!
Here's how I see the issue.
The objectives are (in order of priority):
A: Stay within the law
B: Limit damage to the ecology
C: Keep the level of difficulty of the trail as originally intended
And the options are (in no order):
1) Go through the mud hole
2) Take an existing bypass (if it's...
If the crossbar is rigid enough, then my point doesn't apply. But bear in mind that the bar is designed for towing - snatch straps impart forces that are way in excess of towing limits. If the bar does bend and shorten even slightly, it starts to pull the frame inwards very strongly (the same...
I think this version of vBulletin is a bit buggy. I fond the only way I can get ExPo-hosted pics to appear inline instead of as separate links, is to always PREVIEW the post before pressing SUBMIT. At the time of preview, the pics just appear as text place-holders, but then when I press SUBMIT...
