    Side Flares

Off topic - but that looks a very neat drive-flange end-cap. Where can one get those, if I may ask? regards, Michael...

So why have *any* diff guard? ;) Seriously, though, I keep my diffs clear of from rocks, but sometimes in long grass, water, mud (or from just a lapse of concentration or judgement), one comes up and bites me. Other things being equal, I'd like it to slide under rather than ********** up against an...

Dirt between tire bead and rim?

I like the idea of using it while the wheel is still on the truck! It gets around the problem of having to stand precariously on the wheel as you apply leverage, to stop it moving .

If I'm not mistaken, the zinc acts as a sacrificial anode, so it protects against corrosion even if it's scratched through to the underlying metal.

    09 Defender... what's the word?

Confusingly, the TD5 is sometimes referred to as a BMW engine, because it was developed under their ownership, if I am not mistaken.

    Improved Engine Cooling?

It's there to make it hard to recover any nuts, bolts, washers, etc. that you drop from above. Seriously, I have no idea why they put that stuff on. Lose it, unless someone else knows a good reason to keep it.

    Snakes

Not actually a spider, either! Although, despite appearing to have 10 legs, it is still in fact an arachnid (in this case a solifuge). The front pair are pedipalps, akin to the antennae on insects. In South Africa they are called Red Romans. I believe solifuges are the world's fastest-running...

Embedding directly seems to work sometimes and not others. I find if I preview the post before submitting, it works properly when the post is submitted (although at preview time, it just shows where the attachments will be).

    Snakes

One thing to keep in mind about snakes, too, is that they should be really low on your list of things to worry about. The annual death toll from snakebites in the USA is around 12(!). Bee sting fatalities are about ten times higher, as are fatal lightning strikes. More people die tripping over...

Increase Traction w/o a rear locker? How?

Driving with fiddle brakes is quite an art. It has to be reactive, because there isn't any point in applying a brake to get additional traction, until the wheel starts to spin. At first you pretty much have to be stuck, and then apply the appropriate brake to force the other wheel to turn. (It...

    Michael's new (old!) G-wagon

Yes, Magna, a giant Canadian automotive company, took over Steyr Puch and now manufactures the G Class under contract to MB. Apparently they have recently extended the contract to produce them until 2015. I am pretty sure it's still all done in the same factory as before, it's just a change of...

    700 BHP Brabus V12 G

Oh, I think it's cool, no question! And on the road, I expect you could probably use all 500kW, just moving the air out of the way. :) I just can't think of how 500kW could be harnessed to give any increase in true off-road capability, for a vehicle of that type. Above 200-300kW, either the...

    Improved Engine Cooling?

Of course what Scott said is good sense. However, I trust this isn't the kind of thing you mean when you refer to "checks and balances" that the integrity of this site depends on: Is Rob's the kind of life-threatening misinformation are you referring to? There might be threads where your...

Increase Traction w/o a rear locker? How?

I suspect we are saying the same thing, or at least reaching the same conclusions. Where we differ is this: Because torque is the result of the engine power working against the available traction, there is zero torque on the flying wheel, and therefore zero torque on the other wheel, due to the...

Increase Traction w/o a rear locker? How?

Right. But the power is derived from the torque - the reason we don't have power, is because we have insufficient torque to make the wheel rotate. Discussing torque is the simplifed version of analysing it in terms of power. The use of a locker or LSD does (may) indeed result in power, and hence...
