From Freightliner ambulance to RV - we hope!

Thanks Oz, but I think we're going to stick with just two seats in front. I did like your office setup, though!

From Freightliner ambulance to RV - we hope!

Our rig has a center console, between the two (that's all there are) seats in the cab. The console is nice, but the top is cluttered with a siren control, a PA system, and tons of switches. The rearmost section has a nice recess, into which a smallish cooler will fit. That will be great for...

Kara and I like this idea! In fact, since we're still in the plan/layout formulation stage, we would very much welcome that input. So much so, that Kara thinks we should offer a prize (or prizes) to the best input. We'll bring some FBomb tee shirts and mugs.

I'll look in there tomorrow. If I can figure out how to get it open. 🙄

Hi there, we were thinking of going on Saturday - it seems they start packing up stuff on Sunday. I just talked to Kara, though, and she's good with coming out both days so we'll be there Sunday. Should we bring the rig? It's totally untouched.

Funny! We aren't camping overnight there, so we didn't plan to bring it. We're just going to buy a day pass. Can, and should, we bring it to park for the day? Last year was a muddy mess, but this year's weather looks much better. We'll drive it and park it, if we can do that. Are you going...

    Freightliner ambulance conversion project.

Hi Oz. I'm not sure if you're joking, or if there's a way to pull the codes off mine. But, if you can you're welcome to go for it.

Okay, it's Monday morning. I left Philly on Friday, at about 3pm, and arrived in Scottsdale, AZ last night at almost 10pm. Whew... Here are a few pics: The interior is in wonderfully great shape. Kara and I are really impressed with the build quality. Regular RVs and campers just aren't...

I agree... this thing must weigh a thousand pounds. But, the rig handled and drove fine - so we're going to leave it as is. It may come in handy!

Funny, but that's almost exactly what I told Kara. We have a transfer switch on our house, with a small critical load panel powered by a propane generator. It's small, though... just enough to run some important circuits. The ambulance generator, with its continuous duty cycle and 8kW output...

Well! Sorry, my pics are on my phone and I can't post them. I've been a bit too busy driving the beast to update you guys, sorry. The short summary, for now, is that this thing is great! GEV was great, too. I'm about half way back to AZ now, and just stopped for early dinner in Morrelton...

Good tire and wheel info, Ozrockrat, thanks! I've packed a few things, based on input here, including gloves and some I'm-not-a-commercial-vehicle-so-don't-mess-with-me door signs and red stucco tape (leaves no residue) and the Hula girl my oldest son gave me. And, of course, a tape measure...

That was helpful - and, you even pre-plugged in our proposed tire sizes! Those 20" monsters are probably bigger that we need to go, though. And the ones I found are all rated for 68 mph max. Even though the surplus 20"ers are available for a lot less money than the 22.5-inch semi tires, I...

    Freightliner ambulance conversion project.

This thread has been really helpful, and sparking lots of thoughts and plans. Thanks for paving the way. Are your current beastly tires 11.00R20? I've read through the thread a few times and see that you changed tire sizes a couple of times. In response to your suggestion in our new thread...

Hi dlh62c, that did seem to help. We have our business insurance through the Hartford and now have the ambulance insured there, too. I didn't realize that getting insurance on a conversion might be tough, but we got it worked out and it's actually a lot cheaper than I'd expected. We were...

From Freightliner ambulance to RV - we hope!

That's a helpful explanation, thanks! Reading your thread about the tire changes you went through, and the clearance mods you made, was informative. We don't plan to go as large as you did, but perhaps bigger super singles would be a good option for us. Thanks much for the info...

I think we were typing at the same time. Thanks for the additional information and I'll definitely have them show me how to check the transmission and all the fluids. Until I can get the data plate cover off, I won't know what transmission is in there. I asked them and all they could tell me was...
