Thoughts on overall height of your set up. How tall is too tall for the backcountry?

We built out a custom slide in camper shell last winter, our first new, "non-reno" build so in essence we had a clean sheet of paper to start with. It was delicious but also a bit daunting in a way as all of the design decisions we made up front, we would have to live with for a long time...

Post Pics of Your Hard Side Camper!

Willard27 Thanks for the compliment. As far as your CPT build, I would suggest spending a few extra bucks and get a roof........ The key to the build is taking your time and enjoying the learning curve (in my case, it is always a cliff!) In his great book "Build your own Overland Camper"...

Post Pics of Your Hard Side Camper!

Simple I hate to miss answering a query and I did miss this one, sorry. A bit late replying but good point on redundancy. I did consider the system that you suggested, as well as all the other options out there with inbox tiedowns but I felt if the components were skookum enough with the...

    Running truck idle all night....

It is a good question and I am no expert on 18 wheeler truck design but I would guess that the high exhaust stacks would keep the exhaust gases far enough away to not be a problem. I am guessing that there has been lots of engineering put into the exhaust design of these big rigs to cover off...

    Running truck idle all night....

In another life, I worked as a death investigator and came across many individuals whose deaths were as a result of hypoxia caused by exposure to carbon monoxide (CO). The problem with CO and the much misunderstood realities of being exposed to it, is simply that it is not just a fresh air...

The Road Chose Me tackles Iceland

Well Done Dan! "Aurora" couldn't have wished for a more appropriate name and I suspect she will have tons of fun explaining it in a few years!

    campsite pics..lets see um

Thanks ITTOG. Looks like I am going to get overrun by winter so will have to stick with what I have for now. Indeed as you mentioned, I was looking at bent aluminum plate glued/screwed onto fiberglass backer which is glued to the Composite panel. Like yours, mine will go right across the...

ITTOG I am about to redo the back door drip guard on my camper. I really like the look of the one you did on your pop up. Is it bent Aluminum? Screws? Sika? etc.... I would be interested in any info you would be willing to share. Thx NOPEC

Summer Overlanding in Nunavut at 69 deg. N. Latitude - The Search for the Tomb of Captain Sir John Franklin Continues!! (part 1)

Dirtwhiskey Well that is high praise thanks. The true north it is every bit as amazing as you are imagining. You'll get there. And by the way I forgot in my last post that I was going to apologized on behalf of all of us British North Americans for putting a bunch of holes in Ft. McHenry and...

Summer Overlanding in Nunavut at 69 deg. N. Latitude - The Search for the Tomb of Captain Sir John Franklin Continues!! (part 1)

Dirtwhiskey I knew that history of the ships a bit. I do recall that tune, BTW..... Nothing like 12 inches of re-enforced oak to take on ice, prior to steel or the more exotic hulls these days. Two of the guys I did the King William Island quadding trip with are fellows of the Royal...

Summer Overlanding in Nunavut at 69 deg. N. Latitude - The Search for the Tomb of Captain Sir John Franklin Continues!! (part 1)

DirtWhiskey I am tracking down Nansen's book.....! I completely agree with your thoughts on the series "The Terror" and would highly recommend it for winter time viewing. Of course if you believe the screenplay based on Dan Simmons Book by the same name, Crozier would have lived out his days...

Slide In / Demountable Camper Attachment Methods

CJV8 Here is something that might interest you... I just built a cable and pulley system for a new camper that utilizes bed mounted tiedown points and both secures and tightens all four corners from the back (I actually needed one set on each side....) I used the factory bed tiedown points...

New Old Perfect Expedition Camper (NOPEC) - Transitioning a 1995 Kodiak Truck Camper Into A Newer Version

I accidently read this thread as well last night after a "Canadian Thanksgiving turkey outing" and was exhausted after finishing it (the thread that is, not the turkey...) The Nova Kool brand checked all the boxes and the 100 ltr model 3800 was perfect for us. It was the largest size before...

New Old Perfect Expedition Camper (NOPEC) - Transitioning a 1995 Kodiak Truck Camper Into A Newer Version

Oops, 10 months later i was re-reading this thread and see i missed the question. I bought it from a guy in Cranbrook in july 2021. I was inspired by the way yours looks and this fall i removed all the decals, except for a bear and the word kodiak on each side, sanded it with 800-3000...

Summer Overlanding in Nunavut at 69 deg. N. Latitude - The Search for the Tomb of Captain Sir John Franklin Continues!! (part 1)

Of course your countryman Francis Crozier had the real brains in the whole Franklin affair and if he had been in charge, I think chances were good that there would have been an entirely different outcome...
