2020 Overland Explorer Vehicles (OEV) CAMP-X pop-up slide-in pickup camper (renamed "Back Country" as of 2023)

I have this https://www.amazon.com/Indel-TB51A-Travel-Portable-Refrigerator/dp/B01J0WQ4KS Indel fridge. It fits well on the bench, is relatively quite and doesn't use too much power.

    Full Size Overlanding In Namibia/Botswana?

I visited almost every National Park in Botswana with my Ford Transit AWD. I made it without mishap but it was sometimes close. The biggest problem was tire size and ground clearance with my 225/75R16 tires. The local Toyota usually have at least 245/75R16 and up. All the Safari operators drive...

    Full Size Overlanding In Namibia/Botswana?

There are none in Canada. Even the Ranger is different from the the ones sold in the rest of the world. The Transit and the Sprinter are about the only vehicles sold in Canada which can be a good base for an overland vehicle and are at least very similar to the ones sold in the rest of the...

    Vehicle Pondering

I have traveled in Africa, North and South America and Europe with my camper since 2010. I build a composite camper on a Ford Transit AWD chassis and stayed within 3500 kg at least on paper. In reality I had 3700 kg wet fully loaded with all our gear and ourselves. This combination was very...

    Full Size Overlanding In Namibia/Botswana?

My experience with the 7700 lbs restrictions was in 2011/12 when we travelled through Africa. Check the websites of the National Parks for up to date information. But staying within the 7700 lbs limit is helpful for international travel because in almost all countries outside North America a...

    Full Size Overlanding In Namibia/Botswana?

I have done all of Southern Africa (SA, Nam, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mosambik etc.) in a 4wd camper about 20 ft long, a little over 7ft wide and almost 9 ft high. I had no problems but I wouldn't want to have anything bigger. Height was the most critical factor because of low branches. You should...

2020 Overland Explorer Vehicles (OEV) CAMP-X pop-up slide-in pickup camper (renamed "Back Country" as of 2023)

I have my Camp X on a F 150 crew cab 5.5 bed with max tow package. The only mod I have are Timbrens and e rated tires. So far I have done about 100,000k (60,000 miles) including a trip to the Canadian arctic with the camper. We live in the Rockys with mostly steep hills and drive a lot of gravel...

    sprinter vans

Look at the Transit AWD. It has a gas engine and no problems with the emission control systems. Service and repair costs are a lot lower at Ford. Mercedes is expensive.

Any recommendations for a shipping company from Morocco to the US?

I suggest you check with seabridge whether they can arrange anything. The other possibility is Grimaldi Lines. When I shipped from Uruguay to Europe the Grimaldi ship had a stop in Tanger.

2020 Overland Explorer Vehicles (OEV) CAMP-X pop-up slide-in pickup camper (renamed "Back Country" as of 2023)

Yes it was the first full size prototype. I talked Mark into it and when I convinced a friend to buy a unit he build them. Based on our experience and input some modifications were made for the production units. Most importantly the roof is a lot lighter now and we found some other areas where...

2020 Overland Explorer Vehicles (OEV) CAMP-X pop-up slide-in pickup camper (renamed "Back Country" as of 2023)

Those two extrusion where the softwalls are attached are in my experience the only place where some condensation developed. I fixed that by putting thin strips of closed cell foam on them at least where the bed is. Mark found them for me.

    Pop-ups with inside showers?

If you are considering a flatbed have a look at Camp HBE https://overlandex.com/pop-up-truck-campers . It is an insulated flatbed pop up with wet bath. Alaskan is the only other insulated pop up flatbed I know. Flatbeds simply have so much more useable space.

    Pop-ups with inside showers?

A Propex or Truma propane heater vents its exhaust to the outside. They will not contribute to condensation. Only cathalytic heaters like Wave or Buddy cause condensation.

    Pop-ups with inside showers?

If you want to use your camper in winter you should look at the insulation and the condensation issues especially if you plan on washing and having a shower indoors. Very few pop up campers have any reasonable insulation. Hallmark and Overlandex CampX and maybe Northstar have insulated softwalls...

    U.S. Truck for S. America

A 1/2 t truck especially with heavy payload package can carry a Hawk or similar camper. I know two travelers who traveled several years on the PanAm one with a Tundra and Milner the other witha F 150 with a Granby without technical problems. My F 150 has carried a Hawk and now a Camp X to Tuk...

    U.S. Truck for S. America

The F 150 in SA is the same as in NA. Both 5l and 3.5 Ecoboost. I saw very few newer trucks with engine or tyranny problems. The ones I saw were older very heavy trucks who overheated their tyranny in these steep mountains. You will find heavier trucks in Mexico and in Chile. The ones in...

    U.S. Truck for S. America

3/4 ton or 1 ton trucks are not sold between Mexico and Chile. The only 1/2 ton truck available in basically all countries is the F 150. I agree that for anything bigger than a small pop up camper you need a 1 ton truck. All of them are very rare in SA. Get a good reliable truck and hope you...

What's your ideal RAM with mods for overlanding with ~2000lbs payload?

One more try. You are going to drive at least 60,000 miles in an area where there are no 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. Between Mexico and Chile they aren't sold. With a 1/2 ton with heavy payload you will be in the 7,500 to 8,000 lbs range with a modified 1 ton with oversized tires you will be way north...

What's your ideal RAM with mods for overlanding with ~2000lbs payload?

I have done Tuk to Chile. Here my 2 cents: Don´t take a modern diesel. I have seen lots of diesels with DEF and DPF problems, problems with the ECU at altitude and they are not used south of the US. You don´t need an extremely capable offroad vehicle, any 4x4 truck in stock configuration will be...

    Total Composites full introduction!

I assume the foam you use is closed cell PU or similar foam. This foam doesn´t absorb water. In my composite camper I cut a 3 inch diameter hole in one of the panels to get access to the winch which lowers the spare wheel on the Transit. Because it was only a small panel to cover the rear of...
