    Solid human waste disposal/containment?

I don't think that Walmart thing is necessary. A 5-gallon bucket with a screw-on lid works just as well. I find that it doesn't even need a special seat; the rim of the screw-on lid isn't sharp. Nor are special bags necessary; grocery store bags are fine. The key for me is sawdust. Put some in...

    Stronger tarp than Kelty Noah?

The Kelty Noah’s tarp is 68D poly with an 800 mm coating. A 12 x 12 is $75. I have a Unigear tarp from Amazon. It’s 210D oxford with a 3000 mm coating, 10 x 13 for $42 including lines and stakes. So stronger, more waterproof, and cheaper than the Kelty. I love the Weanas tarp poles, out of...

    Peg Hammer Options?

I've had the hammer I linked for several years. It has held up very well. I bought it based on the great reviews and have not been disappointed.

    Peg Hammer Options?

It can be very hard to put drive stakes into a campsite pad that consists of a deep layer of stones covered with a thin layer of soil. I like this: It's 3 tools in one: hammer, stake puller, and digger. The digger is effective for removing stones. I keep this tool in my car to break the window...

    Electric chainsaw for specific purpose

Since I first started this thread, there has been a change in my situation. I got an EGO battery-powered lawnmower and love it! My goal now is to start collecting wood from a nearby national forest. I would only be cutting a couple of bushels each time I pass through the forest. Up to about 6"...

    Rumpl blanket

Get Out Gear has a less expensive down blanket. $72 on Amazon, 50 x 77. 650 down with DWR finish. Excellent reviews.

    Fiskers X7 hatchet: NO!

Correct, I bought it to split kinding from wood up to about 4" in diameter. I found it really ineffective for that purpose. Sure, I could get a heavier hatchet or axe, but shouldn't any hatchet, regardless of size, be able to split dry 4" wood? If It can't handle wood that size, what's it good...

    Fiskers X7 hatchet: NO!

I have to differ. As I mentioned I have another old hatchet. It's the same size and weight as the X7, so I figured the Fiskars, being new and having a more refined blade design, would do better on the same size chunks. The old hatchet can easily handle 4" wood. The X7 could not. Maybe it works...

    Electric chainsaw for specific purpose

I checked my saw. It's a 14" Homelite corded. It feels very safe to me. Light, easy to control. I cut myself lightly on the leg once with a gas saw because I was tired and the weight of the saw pulled my arm down after the cut.

    Fiskers X7 hatchet: NO!

I read a lot of good reviews about the Fiskers X7 so I picked one up today. Very disappointed! It's too light to have much of an effect on cord hardwood (6" in diameter), but it's more than that: there's something weird about the shape of the blade. It more or less bounced back off the wood and...

I had no idea you could put a cord that long on ANY outdoor power tool. Thank you.

Sleeping Bag & Pad Recommendations for Big Guys?

Sounds like you found a good solution to both your mattress and sleeping bag. What makes the Megamat comparatively hard to roll up is the layer of foam on the top. That's also what makes it so comfortable and usable below zero. If you're happy with the way it rolls up, you have the most...

What do you think is the maximum safe cord length for my small electric saw?

Sleeping Bag & Pad Recommendations for Big Guys?

Haha! Well, it's also a fact that tall people are more successful in life, so you win out in the end. Some more ideas: (1) You can cover the mattress with a sheet if you don't like the feeling of the mattress. (2) The Exped Megamat Duo actually does come in LW, 41" x 77.6" REI has it in stock...

    Electric chainsaw for specific purpose

You make some good points. My point about hiring someone is that I might as well buy a cord of cut and split wood instead of paying someone $200 to make 10 cuts. $20 a cut? Seriously? Based on the replies above, I'm leaning toward abandoning my idea and seeing if I can cut up the big tree by...

    Electric chainsaw for specific purpose

Mike, thanks. I don't already have batteries. For small wood, I can just drag it out of the woods and cut it by the garage with my corded electric saw, which I really like. Unfortunately this large maple is about 100 feet from the house, so I was thinking I needed a larger noncorded saw. Hmm ...

    Electric chainsaw for specific purpose

As mentioned, the tree is on the ground. It's partly cut up. I need to make about 10 more cuts on that tree. The quotes I had for cutting up the rest of the tree were about half the cost of a cord of cut and split firewood.

Sorry for the confusion. Changed my post to read "cordless."

Sleeping Bag & Pad Recommendations for Big Guys?

I'm amazed that you're comfortable on a 2" mattress at your size. Really? I'm half your size and that's too thin for me. I like about 3" on a cot and 4.5" on the ground. I find there's no added comfort beyond 4.5". If you sleep hot, why do you need a bag that you can zip up completely? If I...

    Electric chainsaw for specific purpose

I know there's a very long thread about this. Considering everything that was said in that thread, can anyone recommend a cordless chainsaw for my specific use? Given the very high cost of oil right now, I'd like to harvest some wood on my property for my wood stove. Here's what I'm looking for...
