A compromise for sure, and no perfect answer. One thing to remember- the smaller the kids the more stuff you will be hauling. A true inverse relationship- toys, strollers, play pens, etc etc. So likely the ‘perfect’ setup will be elusive as your needs/interest/destinations/etc will change...

Back to OP- I did a UTE bed -literally- on my ‘06 PW and loved it! Much more versatile- bed sides fold down or removable, totally flat, etc. Actually considered one for my current F-150 but already had a Leitner rack which I modified to fit.

I’ve run 285/75-18 (35’s) on my 150’s with said 2” lift, really like the look, fits nicely but I do trim/remove the horizontal frame extensions in the lower front wheel wells. Not horrible impact on gearing/mpg, no issues towing if using tow mode as it bumps the shift points. Given your size...

The modern ambulances utilize an auto deployed chain system- no idea if you can retrofit or the cost to do so, but worth a look/see...

Use ratchet straps in both directions for the move, not worth the potential issues.
